I want to get my car louder so im going to get new subs and a new amp but i was wondering if i was to just keep the amp i have and the pre fab box and switched my 2 JBL GT4 12"s for 2 alpine type R 12"s would i hear any diff?

BTW the JBL's are only 250 wRMS

well it all depends on what amp you have. and if you wanna keep the same subs and want them louder try building a new box that fits your subs exactly, just experiment with them b4 you go out and buy a whole new set of subs, prefab boxes are usually not very good.

400w on 2 Type -r's will most likely not be louder at all compared to the JBL's. First thing on your list to change, like already said, is a better box.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

would a box built to the type R's needs work better for the JBL's then the prefab box?

that way if i dont like it i can still upgrade to the type R's or would i be better off just getting a box built for the JBL's?

If your going to get some type R's you will need to upgrade your amp. Type R is power hungry. 400 rms is not going to get it done. I am feeding one 12' 600 rms in a coustom ported box. It can take plenty more, but for my application it is not necessary. Sounds loud and clean. 600 rms is a good starting point for type R, it will **** up plenty more. Something to consider.

ummm 400 will work although they will take a good amount more. but even off a little power are loud
will work!?!?! 200 watts a piece on a 500rms woofer that some people put 1000+ on! I don't think 400 will work at all to get an R moving... Upgrade the amp, build a box, and get the Rs... or build a new box for the JBLs and you will probably notice a lot more output.

Umm I disagree ..... First off at most freq in most ported enclosures the sub won't move massive amounts anyways. and just because a sub is rated for more power doesn't mean it takes more power to get it moving. Perhaps it has better cooling and that is why it is rated for more power. Perfect example. A stock FI BL 18 is rated 1000 watts rms. Now with all options it is said to take 2000 watts RMS. So are you telling me it takes massive amounts of more power to drive the fully loaded??? Doubtful. And I know for the fully loaded option they have to take some of the metal out so it does drop the BL a little. But again even with this example in ported boxes at least it isn't as important cause the mechanical losses don't come into play as much. sorry if it is choppy I am a bit groggy and tired

and moving moving moving does not matter as much as you would think. Actually I would say from theory off the top of my head. Per amount of wattage a driver is more efficient with less power cause the more power being fed into it translates into more heat which brings higher imped. rise. Also the more it moves the tighter the suspension gets so it is fighting that. As most competitors know. When you double power typically in real world you don't get the full 3 db you are looking for. more like 2 to 2.8 depending on how much pressure is in the car and how mow power you are already running
