Lets say I have a Class D amp that puts out 200 watts RMS @ 4 ohms

I want to hook it up to a sub that is rated at 350 watts RMS but with a sensitivity of 96db (2.83V @ 1m)

...and its going into a 1.8 cu ft vented box (after displacement) tuned to 29 hz.

will this subwoofer reach its full potential?

Power Handling, RMS 350W

Sensitivity 96dB (In car) (2.83V @ 1m)

FS: 23hz

Re: 4.0 ohm

Infinity subwoofer? Only company I remember that uses more power than 1 watt (2.83 volts at 4 Ohms is closer to 2 watts) and uses an in-car sensitivity rating.

Anyway, you should receive what the subwoofer was designed to do with that much power. Say the amp under-rated by 50 watts and you've got 250 watts going to your 350 watt subwoofer. If the rating on the subwoofer is accurate you should have no problem with mechanical or thermal issues with that amp/sub combo.

don't base much off of saying an amp is underrated. most amps are tested at 14.4 volts. does you car run at 14.4 or close to it at all times? if not then don't pay much attention to it. my amp is rated at just over 859 at 2 ohms at 14.4. my car almost never sees 14.4 so i didn't worry to much about it.

Ummm. You realize sensitivity means JACK. Absolutely means nothing even taken in car cause not all measure from the same starting point. Also there are some subs that have a low sens rating but work really well in ported enclosures and they would slam anything watt for watt that had a high sens rating that would be sealed. If you just want the sub from that numeral value. Go for sealed subs. Most of them to my knowledge have a high sens rating (which means jack there again) even for per amount of power that rating doesn't really have a lot to do with system efficiency . If you really want to be loud and low power find a sub that works in a large vented box and go big as you can while retaining musical reproduction to your desired listening... Actually I thought of an example. Potts used two type R 12's (in a bandpass). he ran M1 ... the lowest class in meca.... did right under a 154 at the body and I think pushing a 155 at the kick on a TERMLAB!!!!. I believe he was running around 2000 watts. Seems like a good bit. But he won at world finals by 10 db. beat class 2 and 3 with his class 1 score. Now ready for the best part the type R 12's are rated 85db sensitivity !!! more than 10 db under what you are looking at. And you are talking about most likely the loudest 2000 watts in the world PERIOD. (efficient !!!!) it was the box. There again the sens didn't come into play there. And this wasn't even a one note wonder

nobody responded. well Want an efficient sub that works well. the type R's. The audiobahn aw1200's although they don't take a lot of abuse they get LOUD off not too much power. If you can find some old shockers. I bet the audioques knowing they are a dd motor with more of a daily driver softparts

You do have a point about sensitivity in that the system as a whole is what determines the results. But sensitivity is still an important factor that can make a difference. All aspects of the system must be considered such as the driver, the amps, the enclosures, and YES even the sensitivity. If all else is equal or close, then sensitivity WILL make a difference. However, it is only one small part of the equation. There is a BIG difference between a 85 db/W/1m and 95 db/W/1m speaker. If all else were equal (not saying that it is), the former would require 10 times as much power to reach the same SPL.
