Sub smoked a little, is it shot?

Well just picked up a couple of brutus 12s and had one in my box until I get the new one built. Only feeding it around 600 rms (its rated wattage) and noticed a little smoke comming from the box, pulled the sub and it had some smoke coming from the magnet vent. So I turned everything off to let it cool. The sub has around 2 hours at the very MOST of use. Just curious to see if it was fine and to keep it down for a while or what?

Could be just glue burning off (new subs) or you could have been clipping the signal. Play the sub again and see if it works. Most subs recover ok after a little smoke. Also check/set your gains properly.

hope you didn't burn up your coils.

sounds like a thermal problem.. meaning you better check your gains. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

its most likely not done yet. id say turn it down (thats assuming it still plays once you hook it back up). because if you keep running it like that, eventually its gunna need a recone.

Alright since everything did feel a little hot, Ill turn down the gain a bit, bass boost is off.

It was working fine so I think it might of just overheated a bit, since Ive helped blow up subs (some old crappy orions xtls on a IA 20.1) and those bastards smoked hardcore for 10-20 mins before anything bad happened. (caught on fire)

EDIT: Yeah it was working peachy after that, the weird thing is, is if I wire it in series to bump it up to 4 ohms my amp goes into protect mode, but on 1 ohm its fine. Da.mn old xenon 600.1 getting weird.

Alright because I would hope a sub wouldnt blow that easily. My old tc9 eclipse's coil is completely black and rubbed away in spots and still works, sounds like complete *** and cant even hit low notes anymore (use to go full excursion, now barely moves).

EDIT: Yeah still fine, I think it might of started smoking because I had it out of the box so it was getting more movement than it normally would (basic 1.5cf 35hz ported box) but I turned down the gain and adjusted the bass boost a little so now it still hits but its not getting any of the tinsel slap it was going full tilt. Ill wait a few weeks before giving it full juice (by then Ill have my 4cf 35hz box done and have both getting 300watt)

I've had a sub smoke up on me before and they still worked a year+ afterwards. So my guess is they aren't blown, maybe got hurt a little bit but as you said they still function.
