Sub is making a rattling noise??

Hello guys, I'm a little stumped after building a box for a single Alpine Type X 12" subwoofer. The sub is making a fairly distinct rattle sound when transitioning between notes. The noise becomes more pronounced as the volume increases. I am going to pull the sub tomorrow to check it out thoroughly but I'm afraid I may be spinning my wheels with that since the sub is brand new. Any thoughts as to what the rattling noise might be???

It could be tinsel slapping. (when the tinsel leads to the coil hit the cone)

Or, it could be the coil rubbing...

Or it could be bottoming out.

But "rattle" makes me think tinsel slap. I thought I had a tinsel slap problem with my mid-ranges. They told me to look for dents in the cone right above the tinsels. If the tinsels are slapping, that's where they'd hit.

P.S. Don't free-air the sub. Not at volumes more than like 5%.

I thought I had a sub problem, but turned out to be the amp.
This is definitely not the case. I took another sub setup out of the car to test this one.

It's not the car rattling. I actually opened the hatch area to observe and listen to the sub a low volume levels and it is definitely making a sound that resembles a rattling sound.

IDSkoT,

I will definitely check for tinsel slap, but do you suppose the tinsels would be slapping at low volumes?? I thought that was a problem where the sub was being driven pretty hard?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Welp, I'm thankful for the help I did receive. I ended up pulling the subwoofer from the box and putting my DMM on it. Turns out the woofer has a bad coil. Only 1 coil was actually giving a proper readout.

Turn it on and press on various areas on your box. Could be a box rattle, or check your cone you may have a dustcap loose. Could prove itself very annoying.
ok i have a 10' audiobahn immortal serries sub and when i turn up my stero to about 20 it makes a ratteling noise is that the tinsel inside or what is the problem because if its lower its fine if its a little higher you cant hear it as much but its still there can anyone help?

Your problem sounds exactly like mine. You need to pull the sub and check the coils. You may have a bad coil like I did.
