My guess it is that 10,000 farad cap you are using. Replace it with three 15,000 farad caps.
Your homies down the road won't be able to show you what's truly up with their 10 CVR-12s in that 4^cube box, after you get those three caps that is.

OP here. It is the sub pictured; it has the amp incorporated. Yes they are only made by Crutchfield. However I did buy mine used. I called Crutchfield tech support - best they could give me was "see if you can get it warrantied."

It is hooked up to get level-line output from the head unit. How can I test the RCA cables? Should I put some other output - like an ipod split into RCA cables - to isolate it?

The level of quiet we are talking: I can only hear it when the speakers are off and I put my ear against the sub.

Someone mentioned to check my remote wire. That only serves as a relay information wire to tell the unit to turn on- correct? In any case, it is on the same remote wire as the head unit. The LED on the sub is lit when I turn my key to accessory 1.

How can I test the sub? Should I be doing something with a 9v?

I really appreciate the feedback.

p.s. - it makes a high-pitched squeal when I turn the key to accessory 1 - i.e. power up the sub. That normal?

Yes your idea of using an iPod connected to the subwoofer via a RCA / 3.5 mm connector is a good one and you should try it and report back.

A high powered squeal is NOT normal, kinda makes me think you have bought a bad unit.

While that setup is not really loud compared to what is normal around here, you should def be able to hear and feel it.

No.

Your idea with the iPod is good to see if it is your head unit. To test the rca's just swich them out for another set if you have one laying around. SQL is right though, that squeeling is not normal. Makes me think the unit may be the culprit. Do these two test and if no change it pretty much singles the sub unit out as bad.

Did you hear it before you bought it at all? Or did you buy over the net?

OP, is this the first amplifier that you have ran in that car? It's possible you mixed up polarity on the line converter, one channel being reversed. That would give you almost no output in most cases.

As stated earlier, get a 3.5mm to RCA cord and plug in an ipod or something like that and see if the sub plays loud. Most likely it will. If that's the case, it is most likely the line converter, either it's wiring (most likely) or its internal gains are at minimum, or it needs to be replaced.

Well I am going to conclude that the setup you bought is bad / broken.

Truthfully it was not really a good product / solution to anyway.

I think you should buy a amp, subwoofer , wiring, and a box - it is not that hard and you will have something that would sound good for a long time.

A $200 budget would be decent

It could be done for less but not worth it IMO

A $300 budget would get you something that you would really be happy with.

So what do you think would be best for you?
