A majority of the time, a loss of upper frequency extension is caused by the enclosure being too big, high inductance, or high mms of the driver (usually due to a long coil). You will usually see this with subs that have a ton of throw or really high xmax.Peoples opinions may differ and i have heard a nice TC 15 in a low tuned ported box that sounded excelent, but it did not have the higher frequency punch, If you tune your ported box for higher frequencies they will lack lowend etc...The Sealed is more balanced but ALOT less efficient. Ported can sound good as well so it is not always a straight forward easy decision.
Yea I even notice going sealed to sealed my TC's have a bit less upper bass than the Assassin I love so much. But the lowend is vast in comparison. They are both in the same small enclosure .65cuft before displacement but I added polyfil when I put the TC's in to see if it helps. I might try removing it some day but for now I'm enjoying it., THey are definately not in too large of a box though.A majority of the time, a loss of upper frequency extension is caused by the enclosure being too big, high inductance, or high mms of the driver (usually due to a long coil). It should double the output at all frequencies, so it may be louder over all but maybe not as loud at the particular tuned frequency of a ported box (although it is possible depending on the sub and enclosures etc) I'd take 2 over 1 ported anyday for most SQL subs if you have the power and money //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gifI've got my 15" Avalanche in a low-tuned ported box right now, and the lows are just insane, even though I really need a sturdier box. Mine flexed so bad it is leaking and basically coming apart inside.
I'm dying to try two of these sealed though, and at least doubling the power. I've seen several people say that the Avas are "supposed" to be insane sealed, but there's only one way to find out. They have an Fs of around 16 Hz.
If I had the room for 2 15's ported, I would do that, but that's not gonna happen in the trunk of my civic. I'm betting that with the right amount of power, in the right airspace, 2 sealed will give me at least as much output as the single 15 ported with even better sq. That would be ideal.
I think, from my very limited experience mind you, that for a single-sub setup, especially 12" and smaller, that low-tuned ported is the way to go. But what does going sealed, while doubling the cone area and the power, give you versus that? That's what I'm trying to find out too. I'll know the answer in the next few months. (at least in respect to the specific woofer I'm using)
