Should Canada support US Military actions in Iraq

I would think helping to free of a country of such a ruthless dictator would be good for international relations, though. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
A very poorly executed war. Civilian casualties are insane in Iraq. The Abu Ghraib scandal was a disgrace. The US had a solid attack plan but a complete absence of a reconstruction plan.

That makes me question what the war was really about. Had it been to RID an EVIL dictator out of power, more emphasis would surely have been placed on the reconstruction. However, it was not.

If that was the basis for going to war in the first place, then it clearly represents an unjust war in the eyes of the UN charter.

However, the initial basis for going to war was the whole WMD thing, which we all can agree is BS, both then and now.

The argument that the war is now just or can be deemed acceptable on the basis of removing a dictator (no argument on the awfulness of his regime) is not a strong one, nor is it an acceptable legal basis for war.

Again, if it had been publically stated as being for that reason, it NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

The reconstruction should never be a sole US effort. It should be an international effort. It also hurts that the US is the sole force in the region.

Something tells me that if it was a coalition of many countries in Iraq and not primarily US forces, they wouldnt be trying as hard to rebel. Neighboring countries that generally dislike the US ( mainly their policies) are taking this as an opportunity to smuggle in terrorists just to take stabs at the US forces.

Solution? Have an international coalition rather than a mainly US coalition.

The UN didn't exist pre-WWII.

Keep in mind its charter and guiding principles were designed to stop just that sort of thing in the future.

Hope you don't mind, but here ya go:

UN Charter said:
The Purposes of the United Nations are:
1. To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace;
Would seem to support your view of the war, right? Wrong.

UN Charter said:
The Organization and its Members, in pursuit of the Purposes stated in Article 1, shall act in accordance with the following Principles: ...7) Nothing contained in the present Charter shall authorize the United Nations to intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state or shall require the Members to submit such matters to settlement under the present Charter; but this principle shall not prejudice the application of enforcement measures under Chapter Vll.
What does all this jibber-jabber mean? If a conflict or situation is strictly a domestic affair (ie an unjust dictator, mass murder, anything within the confines of one country) the UN has a) no jurisdiction and b) no means through which to act.

Removal of a dictator equates to violating the principle of non-intervention. Would have been laughed out of the UN. This is the biggest reason why it was in the first place too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

The ONLY appropriate argument for the legality or rightness (forget morals for a second) is the aforementioned argument that a state of war never ceased to exist and military actions in Iraq were merely a renewal of hostilities.
