Setting up stock deck/speakers to sub stage

Just curious how you guys do it.

I normally turn the bass and trebele down on the deck and turn volume almost all the way up, then turn the bass/treb back up till they distort then back off a tad. Then Go ahead and tune the sub amp.

like on my current setup the stock deck goes to 35 out of 37 with the bass/treb down. If I leave those at 0 then I can only turn it up till ~25. Should I do this instead? am I loosing some mids when the bass/treb is turned way down?
