Setting EQ with Sound Meter

I picked up a sound meter from radio shack (cheapie but serves the purpose i bought it for) but then I got to thinking. I can set my EQ with it right? Basicly a SQ system you are looking for a flat resonse all the way across the specrum of sound right?

So I play test tones from 20-20k or whatever and the level should read the same for each freq and then it is set correctly. Or am I mistaken?

Some people like a flat response, personally I think it sounds like ***.

I wouldn't use that cheapie meter for that, to set an EQ properly you need a real time analyzer...

x2 To get better results than tuning by ear you'll need much better equipment than a cheap SPL meter and tones.

I really hate to disagree with you guys, but RTA should all be a starting point not the final say. Your final say should always be your ears and I mean always. No machine to tell you how a speaker sounds. It only can tell you what is going on with the system in the car.

I think it would be user preference, unless of course your in SQ comps. I personally like my sound to have a little more of the highs in it. I listen to a lot of Linkin Park and Evanescense type music. I dont do it to the point that all you here are tweets, but I like the highs to be a little more defined than the vocals. I also like my bass to not over power the vocals. Basically my system is set up to hear the highs, vocals, and low end. I can adjust my low end, obviously, when I wanna rock out some bass. lol... Funny thing is, its all sitting in my storage room in my house waiting to be installed.
