"sq sub" motor transformed into spl sub?

is it possible to take a motor from an sq-oriented sub and rebuild it into an spl performer? I have a tc-7 motor from the eclipse sw8102 my friend screwed up and I'm trying to sell, but if I can use it for building a more spl-oriented sub I'd do that instead. Anyone with some insight?

Electrical damping with that motor is intentionally low so that the Q is better suited for sealed applications, it's probably not the best candidate for an all-out SPL driver. You can still get a decent stroke with it though. I think Xmax with that particular coil was around 24mm.

Actually, if you could stuff a nice flatwind in there, you may be able to raise the BL product (and subsequently, power handling) enough to mellow out the Q and make it more suitable for a medium/large vented enclosures. You'd have to be careful with the suspension so it didn't get peaky from that side of things. You could probably use a wind height of 50mm without concern for bottoming. What is the wind height on that coil?

45mm. considering it has 2 different options for basket attachments, a taller basket could be used for a different coil wind height, maybe even some play with the pole (vents or plugs)

Well, the depth of the motor is what determines the capacity for coil winding height. You don't want to slam into the back plate. 50mm is about as tall as I would go with that one. I wouldn't mess with the cooling on that motor either, it's a good, quiet breather. Doesn't make a shitload of noise under high excursion and allows for plenty of air flow. That's just me, I like extremely quiet drivers. That driver was already capable of two inches of stroke, I'm not sure of you're shooting for more than that. If so, try to find a Ti basket or similar.

Hey, did you pick up that other thing? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif You should build on that.

thanks for the info cianzo. if I can't sell the sub, can you rebuild it???
You bet. Be sure to talk to the more experienced builders also, they may have the perfect solution for you.

I'm not building for others yet, still practicing. Once I get good enough, I'll feel better about the reliability aspect of things. I don't want anyone angry with me for build quality issues, lol.

well that gives me time to raise some cash to make me a build. lmk when you're ready to start building. I'll be one of your first customers. I'll probably hit you up in january. I see lots of subs local that need rebuilt, I just don't wanna mess with them
