but here,

Subs use electricity to make noise.

Subs get electricity from amps.

Amps know what to send to the sub from your headunit.

Forget about max power handling, it's ALLWAYS useless.

RMS is basically the amount of power your sub has been rated to take for a long period of time.

As you run electricity through a sub, it heats up... so RMS is the power at which you can "safely" run a sub for a long time... now you can greatly excede the thermal power handling of a sub by playing short bursts instead of long songs... this is called burping.

HOWEVER, in adition to how much your power your sub's motor can handle, your subs also have "MECHANICAL" limitations which are HIGHLY influenced by the type of enclosure the sub is in... (size, whether the box is sealed or has ports, Tuning of the ports, etc.)

stop feeding the guy information he will not read about to learn. We told him what to get for the budget he listed and he still apparentaly isn't convinced that it will get loud enough.

ones that have only 1 channel ( mono ) are specificly designed for subs only.

You don't need a ton of watts to be heard down the street. I have 850 right now into two subs and it's knocked my rear view mirror off and broke my back window brake light.

For just being "loud" I could get away with half that probably.

I don't think he realized the detailed that is in even a "starter" system. Its not as easy as: buy subs and amp and place it in the trunk.

yeah Im really looking into a 2 type r 12's on the hifionics brutus 1600. I want to run them at 1 ohm. But im just curious, will 800 rms per sub be bad for the sub? or can type r's handle that?

Dont let these people get you to buy a 1000+watt system, thats just ridiculous for a starter system.

300w with the right box will be VERY Very loud and more than enough for a starter.

The setup is critical. I have heard two alpine r's gettin 800w each and they dont sound nearly as good as 1 sub in a really good box at 500w.

If you are going for 300-400 watts then go ported for sure, about 2.5 cubes total tuned to around 28-30 hz

Subs to look at:

Diamond audio 12" d3

Phoenix Gold RSD or ( RSDC 12" 500w or more with this one)

Dayton

and a few others that people seem to like, i personally have had experience with Phoenix Gold RDSC's and they are GREAT.

And unless your car is SOLID like a rock then 2 r's at 800w will sound like a tin can box with fireworks in it, horrible, your backseat and back dash will rattle like hell..

True for the most part. Those are good recommended budget subs. In the correct install though, two type R's off 1600 watts will get much louder than 2 RSD's off 400 watts. They will not sound amazing, but they will get much louder.

how about a 1200 watt amp? the step down from the 1600

and i drive an extended cab silverado 1500, and i don't really use my back seat so i took it out.

so with space not being an issue i am looking to get a well made, perfect fit (for the subs) box.

what are some good boxes to look at? or some companies that make something that would sound great?
