my ported vs. sealed thread.

ok here it is guys. i recently switched from a ported box to a sealed box and just wanted to share what i think. My ported enclosure was 3/4" mdf 3.5^3net tuned to 35 hz.---my sealed box is 4.05cf net made out of 3/4" particle board. now first off i'll say that i used pb due to lack of mdf in my area. although most ppl recommend against it, my box is solid and doesn't flex at all. Now as far as quality of sound, my ported box did have a noticably greater low end extension. But overall the sealed box can take more power from my viper 1200.1. All in all the sound difference wasn't significant enough for me to put my ported box back in, in fact the sealed box handled the double bass of Metalica's "one" much better than my ported box did. So for the moment i'll be sticking with my sealed box.

Double bass should come from the front, not the subs!!! =p

I had the same opinion going from 1.6 cubes @ 35 hz to 1 cube sealed with my 187s. I want to go to a ported again, because I miss that low end.

Why is your sealed enclosure bigger than the ported one? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

x2^^^ that! now go 4.ft ported! And tell use how it soundes? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

because that was recommended to me by a highly regarded guy here in my town, i didn't build a sealed enclosure just for the heck of it. i built it to see the pro's and con's of both type of enclosures in the same car with the same power using the same subs. in reality the boxs are extremely close in size but due to port space on the ported box the net displacements are that much different. Also, i'm putting together a workshop in cooperation with the highly regarded builder here in my town to educate ppl who can't really afford to buy the top equip. and installs. i'm using my car as a guinea pig of sorts to show that it doesn't take thousands of dollars to play this game. if anyone wants to critisize me---feel free to let it all out here and i'll do my best to give my reasons. i'm not into competitions or anything like that so my install is totally for me guys. And i'm certainly not against trying things for myself instead of following others blindly, i like to hear the differences in person, not just read it on my monitor.

no it shouldnt.
No, I do believe the snap in double bass is actually lower midbass, which according to almost any competition guidelines, should be coming from the front and in stereo. I could be wrong. On my setup 90% of the double bass I hear (Cradle of Filth and Lacuna Coil come to mind) comes from the front.

X2, only I'm cheap and have no money for those kinds of experiments. =p

i love to experiment with ideas i have-- if they don't work, i just chalk it up as experience and drive on. but yeah sometimes it can get expensive
I know what you mean, I've built a lot of enclosures that either didnt fit or look the way I wanted it to or it didnt sound as good as the previous one.

I think you got confused on which box size for each application, 4 cu ft ported and 3.5 cu ft sealed makes a lot more sense.
