My install's coming along nicely

Oh well all that matters is you found the problem and it's all good now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yep, basically. Never found the actual problem, just cured the symptom by changing to a better gnd cable. I;d love to know why the chassis gnd we found and used was not good enough! But it's all moot now! :)

Probably not better cable just a better location for the ground going straight to the battery if I am understanding you correctly.

Exactly! Granted I have not done any of the Big 3 (and probably won't) so my battery's gnd wire to the alternator/chassis is still about 8AWG at best. But at least my amps are powered 12v+ and gnd directly with 0AWG cables to the battery.

John Kuthe...

How? How and why would a ground that showed negligible resistance difference from the ground post on the battery (I measured it against a 2AWG jumper cable to the neg battery post) cause an amp not even being driven with audio inputs to heat up terribly? Seriously, I'm curious. I understand the concept of ground loops, but that amp heating was pretty ridiculous.

You're an ee and you're asking this? That's why your degree is useless here. Things in 12volt aren't always as they seem. Like having to use a 700amp battery to "maybe" run an amp that draws 100amps. And we're the noobs?! I actually would consider myself a noob compared to some of the people on this forum even though I have been doing this for 20 plus years. Some of these guys have been innovating since the 80's back when we knew as little as you do so have some respect.

It just does not make any sense when my PDX-V9 amp was heating so significantly when doing NO amplifying. If you or anyone else can help me understand how this could happen I'd really appreciate hearing about it. Otherwise a series of ad hominem attacks is not doing anyone any good.

It is normal to have ground problems when the paint holds your vehicle together.
I think Baby II's primarily held together with little plastic clips. The interior anyway! Cheaper and quicker to manufacture, I'm sure!! Not so great for much else. That's why I wanted a gnd straight to the neg post of the battery! And now I have it too!

Got my $50 WinXP Dell laptop (Ebay) for configuring my Alpine PXA-H800 DSP! Yay!! Batteries work as does Wifi (which I won't need for DSP configuration, I don't think!). Gotta install the DSP configuration software CD, which will be coming soon!

Maybe in between tons of ad hominem attacks, yes.

Grown folk talk. What do you expect? Some of us put a lot of pride and effort into this hobby. It's what we do.

You come on here and become a toxin to our beloved community that we work so hard to save. Separate us, the audiophile from the trunk banger red light nuesance.

It's a hobby. Playing with and installing expensive electronic equipment in your cars. Few to NO ONE here actually builds their own electronic equipment, you're all just buying stuff, installing it, connecting it, configuring it, etc.

I'm just trying to put some pretty good stuff in my new-for-me 2006 Grand Caravan (Baby II) as a part of making her mine! I've got a Yakima roof rack solution for carrying kayaks, and that was a major step in the right direction for making Baby II mine. Now I'll have to find time to actually start going whitewater kayaking again!

It's more than just a hobby for some of us. It's a never ending hunt for musical perfection.

One you will not understand until you experience it. The quest for a holographic band playing just for you
