my first motorcycle

man i've owned or rode every type of bike made, even a 999 ducati (it got me some wood) and to tell you the truth out of sport bikes the most fun are 600's

they accelerate mega fast and are light and small enough to play on and learn tricks.

my favorite is the new yamaha 600 and 600 ninja.

those bikes will go from 0 to 120 fast enough to get you killed.

if you don't have very much sport bike experence then get a 600, and just take it easy and learn the bike and get a feel for it.

if you don't have very much motor cycle experence then find someone with a dirt bike and learn, or a small street bike.

but HELL NO DON"t get a busa, i've been riding for years and those scarm me.

you'll be happy with a 600 just pick a brand that you like, and that 600 is plenty enough to take your life, most red line at 12-14000 rpm's and are pulling strong G's

x2 most new 600s can keep up just fine with liter bikes until they get into the higher power bands. The biggest difference is youll get a higher top speed on the 1000s. I was all ready to buy the 07 R1 and i drove the R6 for shits and i liked it much more, so i bought that instead. IMO unless you plan on having someone on the back of your bike constantly 600s are the way to go.

I'd suggest looking into a Suzuki SV650s...great starter bike. I might be getting one soon, but as for now I have a 2005 Suzuki DR-Z400s. Very fun on and off road

nah its just me...and having it be brand new isnt necessary....

so then its settled....a 600 or 650....maybe a newer model leftover or a used bike with low mileage...what are the biggest things to look for when buying used...

If it is used i would take it to a dealer or mechanic that knows what hes doing and have them inspect it very carefully. Like said above, sport bikes are very commonly abused. Look for scratches on the frame, or paint that doesnt looks newer than the rest of the bike.

i also read something about checking for some type of threaded nut or bolt...which means people have raced the bike...its used as a safety precaution or something?

Yup and read up on the net on what to look for. There are quite a few sites telling you details on what to look for when purchasing a bike. There a big difference if something fuqs up when you riding on 4 wheels rather than two wheels.

I have heard something similar but im not 100% on the details of it. A good and easy indicater of abuse is if the bike has low miles on it and the breaks and tires(especially the front) are really worn on it. Dealerships that take in a used bike MIGHT change out the tires but breaks probably not and worn breaks on a relatively new bike is a good indication of some stunting. I looked at a few used bikes but in the end i felt it was a better route to spend the extra money on a new bike that i KNOW for a fact has never been abused or layed down.

x2.. I wanna feel 100% secure and know whatever I'm on is as stable and healthy as it's going to be when I go rocketing down the road at 100+ mph, espiecally on two wheels

agreed with the advantages of buying new....

not agreed on doing 100+....thats how people die / get hurt / establish shitty reputations for people who want/ride bikes

haha...yeah, you'll be on the road for maybe 2 months at the most with 600cc between your legs before you have the confidence to do 140...but it'll def happen

Also dvrmstrng i hope your plannin on settin aside a decent chunk of change for some gear. I just ordered my bike last week cause it wont actually be in till june and im taking the msf class next week and i have dropped almost a $1000 on a helmet, jacket, and gloves. Im still debating on whether to get pants and boots, my conscious tells me to but i just dont know how much ill use em. Getting good quality equipment will make riding much nicer and safer on you.

haha you are like the 100th person i have heard say that. I really hope i am not like that when i get mine, as being roadkill doesnt seem too appealing to me.
