at the end of this summer i am going to go ahead and get myself a sport bike..

this will be my first bike so i was wondering what your suggestions are:

i am 6" 2 230 lbs...

top speed monster isnt necessary....i think they are all going to be fast enough for me

i am probably going to go used

try to keep price around 6k

so far ive heard alot about....CBR600rr, yamaha YZF-R6S and R1, and maybe a ninja?

what do you guys think?

BE CAREFUL! OF EVERYONE AROUND YOU! I spent 2 1/2 years recovering from a M/C accident that I was dead on impact and after being brought back to life 3 times. Then spent 2 weeks in a coma and then the 2 1/2 years in recovery. Learning everything all over again. Now I can not get jobs in soooooooo many fields becuase of it and am still looking. M/C are so fun, but no one around you cares and do not "look" for you, so I am just giving you my prayers(wether you believe in them or not). I just do not want anyone to go through what I did....????? It is your call......

Hey! Check it out, I'm buying my first bike too! I did a lot of research in the field. The best thing I can tell you is to look for a dealer and just sit on a few bikes and try a get a feel for them. Otherwise, google the bike you're looking at for reviews. Some bikes are great beginner bikes, some aren't.

I've seen time and time again that a Kawasaki Ninja is an excellent beginner's bike. The 500CC version should be well into your budget and handle your frame nicely.

Since I hate crotch rockets, I'm buying a 700CC Honda Shadow myself.

I only picked a 700 CC because I'm buying used. There is almost no difference in price between a 250cc used bike and 750cc used bike. The smaller bikes are even better beginner bikes. If you really think you're going to go out and buy some $6000 motorcycle and be the coolest badass in the area you're in for a real shock. Usually about the first time you lay it down and cause a good $1000 worth of damage is when you regret going all out.

I've got 4 or 5 bike riders in my family. ALL of them have laid their bikes down at least once. Almost every biker I've talked to has laid their bike down at some point or another. It's a fact of life.

I recommend getting a smaller used bike, something you don't have to have any emotional attachment to and can ride easy. Once you get some real experience under your belt you can sell your old small bike (since they keep resale value like mad), and get that new one. I regret not taking this course of action (I want a Honda Rebel 250 SO BAD) but I don't think I'll have the money to upgrade in the future.

see thats the thing...i dont have anywhere near the funds or patience to get a 250 try it out...ride it, lay it down or sell it, pick up a 650 or something and go from there....a friend of mine got a 600 after taking the safety driving course...he said for the first few months he took it easy, never rode on the highway and went from there and it turned out ok

Ehh, i say go for a bigger bike, I actually ride a 700 myself.

I just started riding this year, and it's great.

You may want to check for motorcycle saftey programs in your area which will really help you get started.

Check out http://www.motorcycle.com and look in the "Bikes" tab, they have numerous reviews of all motorcycles and "Shootouts" with 6 bikes in a group.

Overall, just be careful, wear a helmet, wear leathers and know your bike before you really take it riding.
