With your size yes, a 600. Actually really look at an sv650. Really great starting bike (nice power and good handling).

You could look at my bike too. I'm on a Ducati 900ss. The 900 throws you off as it sounds extreme, but honestly its not as quick as the 750's and r1's you have been reading about. I'm glad your taking the MSF class too. I took mine at A.D. Farrows (local harley shop) and I am very happy that I did.

thats crazy man, a 500r would be nice. at your size it should feel just right im 5'11" 230. A cbr f4i is also a pretty good starter bike aswell.

yeah...totally random question but when you move up in engine size does the overal size of the bike actually change...like would a larger cc engine bike be larger and more comfortable for a taller person vs a smaller bike....

I was talking in general, if anyone should get a C/R it should be a busa. If the guy doesn't have any experience at all maybe he should learn somewhere else beside in the street and on a motorcycle that your A$$ isn't above your head when your riding it. Whether it's a 250cc, 500cc or a 750cc you learn to ride in the street, speed isn't an issue.

Yes, usually. Not always. Some of the high end racing bikes get lighter and sometimes a bit smaller (usually longer though). But normally you will find that total weight will go up as the CC goes up.

I put a 250-ninja before reading your size. The 250 WOULD NOT WORK. Actually, it would be just as dangerous as a race bike as you would be very uncomfortable and it would be difficult for you to move around quickly on it.

I got my ducati for 4500 out the door. Top speed is fast enough for me and it handles every twist and turn you can through at it.

I agree with you on the fact that he should learn on a course, not the streets. But a busha is a VERY fast bike. Its HP is actually more than many cars out there (155HP if I remember correctly) and it weighs in the 400lb range (maybe closer to 500). Just a very dangerous bike for a novice.

600 or 650 should be the way to go. Your not going to LOVE the 600, it won't pick up and fly with your body weight, but you don't want it to. Same with my Ducati. I want to just hammer that throttle and ignite, it doesn't let me, not designed for that. I'm glad too. Now, don't get me wrong, a few seconds holding it in 4th and I will get up to 100, but those rockets can crush that.

i see you suggesting either a 250 or 500cc....whats the difference between a 500 cc ninja and a CBR600?...i know 100cc but what is the difference when your talking about 100ccs?

There is a HUGE difference between the 500 Ninja and any 600 sports bike. The 500EX is a beefed up Ninja250. It has almost the same engine, but a little bigger. It's not like the normal sports bike motor. It's small, lightweight, and doesen't have a ton of power. Great beginner bike. Might I suggest a 600 Katana, another good beginner/Intermediate sports bike. But those are if you've road before, if youve never touched a bike, I would start with any 250-500cc bike.

X2 I forgot the katana, very nice bike. You ride Platestacker? Your size and weight would actually help him out if you have as you could give him more experience on the bikes handling (250). I'm 195 so he has a tad more weight than me.

SV's are V-Twins so they don't require 9K+ RPMS to start making it's power. And yea I ride. I'm on my 5th bike I've owned, I love em. The only sports bike I've owned was a 03' ZX-9R a few years ago. And I modded it all to hell. I now have a VTX1800R. well i mean its gonna go like this basically...

3 days of like 8 hours a day of the 250cc training course

a few days just messing around on my friends like 92 something or other 250

so figuere its gonna be like maybe like 30-40 hours of riding under my belt on a 250 before i purchase i know its not much just trying to fill you guys in...katana looks nice btw

Written test is EASY, but you will have a hard time passing if you don't read the book. Also, here in Ohio its even a bit better. It's all on the PC so if you don't know an answer skip it, then once you get 70% you pass. You don't even have to know everything LOL.

You are doing it right if you ask me. 250 pounds, your going to need something bigger than the 250 or 500 no doubt. You will have some idea of this once you take the training class. Tough situation really. I dont' want to recommend something really powerful because you really could get hurt, but your weight makes it hard to pick a good bike for you. I agree with platestacker though Katana may be the best fit. Get your sag adjusted right away so it can handle your weight.
