mp3 player questions

I was hoping to control everything through my HU, but from what i have read, Alpine needs to upgrade their technology on the interface thing. So i guess i could get a cable that goes from ai-net to rca's, then from rca's to whatever hooks up to the ipod, not sure on that one.

My HU doesn't have aux inputs, just checked. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I read something about the 40 gig ipod... Dont get that.. they are shit ipods. Thats why they stopped making them.. The hardrvies in them are crap and they break all the time, and apparently the warranty will keep giving you a new one, untill the year is over and your f-ucked. Im getting a 30 gig video for christmas.

Personally, if I were to do it all over again, I would get a different mp3 player. I mean, the iPod isn't bad, but there really is better out there. I think the 1st gen was the best built iPod, except for the battery issue which was fixed via a lawsuit.

As a note regarding the Alpine interface for the iPod, I do use it. It does work pretty well for me. The Ai-net interface limits the speed and the amount of data that can be processed so it limits it to 255 items in a list. I dont' have 255 artists, and only listen to albums anyways so I don't have a problem with it. It charges the iPod which is a plus.

I would check out other players if I were you. Just go check them out for yourself first.

Sorry for all the posts guys, but i need a little help in the mp3 category.

After looking around and reading some reviews regarding the ipod and the philips HDD6330, and have come to the conclusion that even though the ipod might have more accessories, the philips has more features and, from what i hear, sounds better. So i got to looking, and was wondering, if i bought the philips mp3 player(http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7342789&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat63100050014&id=1122651984408) and got the dock to go with it (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=product&id=1122654273030), which would be mounted in my car. Then i could get a cable that goes from mini stereo (from dock) to dual rca (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Rkv08E2pFQ0/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=157050&I=119MCON2M), and from there a cable that goes from dual rca to AI-Net (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Rkv08E2pFQ0/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=227550&I=469ALPAIRC), which will plug into my Alpine HU.

Will this work? I know it sounds confusing, but in theory, it should work. I havnt found a cable that goes from ai-net to mini stereo, but if i can, thats what i will get.

i chose a creative zen micro photo-8 gigs

the main reason why is so i can use the napster to go service. the to go service lets you load up as many songs as you want on your mp3 player for 15$ a month instead of a dollor a song just 15$ for 8gigs worth of songs, everysong you get on itunes you can load on there its really cool and you get to listen to them and all the goodies of reg napster, but you cant burn them to cd's you have to buy to burn thats why i use my zen micro for all audio in my car

Another question (got so many on here, i'm confusing myself). When u hook a mp3 player to ur HU, does the HU read the file on the mp3 player, or does the mp3 player sorta bypass the HU and go directly to the speakers? make sense?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

The reason i ask this is because the signal to noise ratio on the philips is lower than most, so would i have to turn the volum up on the mp3 player to get full volume out of my car speakers, or would it only effect the volume it puts out in headphones?

I just want to find a hole to crawl into and cry!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif :crying: //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

Depends on the DAP. For instance, when I connect my Rio Karma through the dock and into my HU through RCA inputs, the volume buttons on the Karma only affect the headphone jack. The signal that's going to the HU is not affected by volume modifications, as it doesn't pass through the op-amp that outputs on the headphone mini-jack. So what I'm saying is that I can connect my headphones to my Karma, and connect the karma to the dock; the Karma will put out a signal on the headphone jack (volume controllable) AND will put out a signal through the dock's RCA outputs (volume uncontrollable). My HU has an input sensitivity setting too so that if I have a device which puts out low voltage, it can amp 'em up correctly (i.e., it has a "gain" control, however it's discrete values; low/med/high).

S/N ratio doesn't anything if you aren't into hi-fi, critical listening, which is obvious in your scenario.

The HU doesn't read any "files". All the HU cares about is a fluctuation of voltage getting sent to it. The signal will get "routed" to the speakers (that is, after the HU is done with it). If you've got DSPs, it may have an ADC onboard but then you know it has to go through a DAC in order to output to speakers or its line out. So there's already 3 modifications to the signal: 1) passing through the ADC, 2) the DSPs doing their thing & the final HU stereo mix, and 3) passing through the DAC.
