Matching Amps and Subs

I am trying to figure out is there an easy way to match amps and subs. I am concerned with buying an amp that will be too powerful for a set of subs or not powerful enough.

I do understand looking at the ohm ratings by looking at what the amps and subs are rated at concerning ohms. So matching an amp in 2 ohm mode works better with subs rated for 2 ohms.

My question is the RMS ratings. If an amp is rated at 100 watts by 4 channels, that will put 25 watts per channel output from the amp.

So do I judge what subs to get by the rms rating of the subs or the peak power handling?

So should I look for subs rated at 25 watts RMS or 25 watts peak power handling?

Also any suggestions will gladly be taken.

100wrms X 4 means 100 watts per channel

and FORGET peak ratings always use rms as your guide

also, just because a sub might say 2 ohms on the box does not mean that you need a 2 ohm stable amp. It means that 2 ohms is the load per coil so if they are dual coil subs with 2 ohm coils, if you had one sub, you need a amp that makes power at either 1 ohm or 4 ohms

Thanks for the input.

I think I see what confused me. When looking at amps the power rating isn't split per channel it is the power per channel( 100watts x 4=100watts per channel for a total of 400 watts).

I looked at a HU and the power rating is 200 watts and it is split per channel and that is what was in my head when looking at amps.

Thanks again.
