JL subs......you pay for what you get period.

Realize one thing...the W7 is still a woofer. It'll blow as frequently as any other quality made woofer. Not only do you pay for the aforementioned reasons (patents/R&D..), you are made to pay an unreasonable amount of money for a fix/ recone because of it as well- and from what i hear these fees would actually buy you a whole new sub from another comparable manufacturer. It simply does not make sense for some consumers, and its understandable.
While I keep seeing the W7 being touted as an SQ woofer, its obvious of what big differences reside in the notion of Sound quality vs a sub that sounds good.

While the W7 may be a linear beast, it may produce effortless smooth bass, no mechanical noise, etc... doesnt mean squat to me if I dont feel tonally it can reproduce instrumental bass, in a transparent manner... the way that I can admire in lesser priced underhung woofers. Now I never expected a woofer to be perfect, but dear lord... if a company is going to label that sub as an SQ woofer, and price it where they do- i expect nothing less than sonic perfection- SQL subs are a dime a dozen that handle much more thermally, who needs one at that price...
Nicely put...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/clap.gif.178cba2c538c68e720c727fcb024b19c.gif

Now, I happened to hear 2 12 W7s at Hot Import Nights, and they sounded exceptional, better than my xxx15. However, my box was made for street beating, not sound quality. Needless to say each sub sounds great. The only problem was, he was demo'ing it with the trunk open...and they were distorting

The point as to why it is HYPE. Those patents and such are doing NOTHING to make it superior, they are only there to help it sell better. I will never buy a JL sub for any application unless I get extreme discounts. They just are not worth my time or money. Stupid *** cone/dustcap cracks and the retarded surround just gets slit like a brotha in prison. Worthless unless you have a reason.
Agreed... The main thing JL is #1 in is marketing to increase their "Hype" factor. Can you watch an episode of MTV's Cribs without seeing a rapper, athelete, or musician not sporting a JL Audio W7? Which JL Audio purposly gave them to market their equipment? How about Funkmaster Flex (ewwww) who plugs JL Audio everytime you see him on camera... That's the thing i dispise about JL the most, the fact that everyone things it's the be all, end all company, and everything else is inferior. But then agian, it's a bussiness and marketing is an essential tool to building a thriving, healthy bussiness. Unfortunately, I'll have to put up with n00bs that buy their JL Audio thinking it's the best untill I convert them into RE fanboys.

i agree

its like jl is reinventing the wheel . and charging your more for it.

is it a great sub? yes . does it perform and sound great?yes . does it sound good enough to justify the price? maybe since this is relative to the listener . have you seen how many patents are on the dub7? this is where the extra cost comes in.

its the same with cars my old man went through the bmw thing then the mercedes thing and where did he end up? with a nissan ..why you ask because he wanted a car that was as dependable as it was comfortable. now my lil brother is getting ready to buy his first new car and where is he headed? to the nissan dealer for the same price as a brand new bmw 325i he can get a nissan altima se-r bigger engine more horse power and more reliable.

Bro, what's worse than that is the fact that those same people who run JL hate on everything else because they haven't heard OF it. If people actually understood the science of audio rather than the actual monetary aspect, then I think that JL would be much poorer and consumers would be much happier. Do not get me wrong, I do love the sound of JL subs (w6v2 is my fav (sq guy)), but I can get 2x as good for the price of one.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif My sister just bought her first car, and that's what she bought. Yes, she can drive a 6spd box, and **** good too.

ALRIGHT!!! THIS IS IT!!! Take a vehicle with unlimited amount of money to spend on it for sound. SQ/SQL/SPL, doesn't matter! For absolute best sound in any of those categories...JL....NOTHING JL, will be apart of that car. PERIOD. The w7 is a great woofer....wooptydoo. There amps are nice too, but who here is goin to tell me an Alpine amp will outlast say, IA 20.1, Arc or Tru-Tech.

I think this is kinda funny. No matter what one person says theres always going to be people who hate JL(and im one of them) and people who love JL. i know i havent been into car audio for a long time(bout 1.5 years) but for as long as ive been around theres always been arguing bout JL and an internet brand.

now im going to sit back with some popcorn and watch;)

To me people put too much stock in subwoofers period. I swear, if I had a dollar for every w7 install with mediocre components i'd have enough to pay off my school loans. Why spend so much on a w7 and skimp on your frontstage? Personally i'd rather get something more practical and spend the rest on kickass three way with proper deadening. Once you reach a certain pricepoint on subs the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

I agree with a lot that has been said. If you pay the $ for a JL or in my case my Aura NS, you have a piece of gear that will "probably" last a lot longer. So as an investment it may make sense to some.

On the other hand, some of us change setups so often it just doesn't make sense to invest in the higher end when there are many options nearly as good, or better at a lower price point.

Also, some of us (I'll include myself) get a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing they bought into the high end. There's a security I feel that my Diamond amp and sub will take the beating of the Arizona heat a little easier than the MA audio amp I started with that was constantly in protect mode during the summer months.

These are the people that would be happiest with the internet companies, but alas...they don't know any better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Remember ... it's individual subjective opinion. I used JL and thought it was the worst sound I've ever had in my car. VERY un-musical sounding trash .....

As far as W7 subs .... Sounds NOTHING like true bass information. Just LOUD , tubby , BOOM ....

I'd really love to listen to the subs your using if the JL sound is very unmusical and trashy to you.

SQ is subjective though, I happen to love the smooth and powerful lows that the W7 has. Some people enjoy a more edgy sound, whatever floats your boat.

You are right .... It is subjective , and even the words we use to describe it is subjective. What you call smooth , I call blubbery and a lack of control, regardless of how much power is put to a W7 .... It has NO transient leading edge to me at all. You may not like it at all , but find a Boston Acoustics SPG-555 sub to listen to. That's what I'm in love with. To me it sounds like real bass on EVERY kind of music.

I will say this for JL though .... I think their 12w6v2 is a fabulously good sub, and actually one of my 4 favorite subs ..... I had JL's amps , and found them cold , sterile , and not sounding like music. I found their best components to sound fake and edgy ..... JMO

I read a few replies, and noticed people talking a lot about custom machinery as if it was great. Something you learn in respect to engineering/manufacturing economics is thatthe less custom work you get done, the cheaper your end product will be, the simpler it will be, the less it will cost you, and the more customer base you will therefor end up with.

So, is all that custom machinery great? Do you think that there is a reason stamped baskets are used in these up and coming companies as opposed to CNC milled pieces (I'm not saying JL used a CNC mill btw).
