JL subs......you pay for what you get period.

I read a few replies, and noticed people talking a lot about custom machinery as if it was great. Something you learn in respect to engineering/manufacturing economics is thatthe less custom work you get done, the cheaper your end product will be, the simpler it will be, the less it will cost you, and the more customer base you will therefor end up with.
So, is all that custom machinery great? Do you think that there is a reason stamped baskets are used in these up and coming companies as opposed to CNC milled pieces (I'm not saying JL used a CNC mill btw).
I don't think it is that much more of a cost for JL Audio to incorporate all of those, "Patiented Designs" because they're basically just redesigned parts of existing components. They're just designed differently, so there isn't any additional parts. I believe JL Audio's prices are based on the supply and demand concept more than anything. A common misconception among the uneducated car audio enthusiast is that JL Audio is the best. That being said, the demand for JL is very high and thus increased prices. This can be said about most companies. For example, Elemental Designs's NINe.1 Amplifier, it started @ $275.00 IIRC and is now @ $350.00 because its such a hot item. Do I dare say Resonant Engineering? $630.00 for the new XXX? I'd like to see the cost for manufactoring before I continue about the RE price increase.

I did not mention anythign about patented designs....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

And also, depending on the design of the already existant component, the machine work for it may be quite substantial. So even without the cost of additional parts, the cost to produce such parts may be rather rediculous.

I just went thru that long ***.....why the W7 hate thread. Well, so I can get my point out there withou everyone going thru 10 pgs.....I started my own thread. Basically JL subs are expensive, but.....you pay for what you get. Its like buying a Benz or BMW......you pay for the design, the patents, the engineering and aesthetics....along with everything else that goes into building a one of a kind sub. I see some of these other companies touting their subs and I see the same dayum subwoofer I see all over the internet with fly by night companies. I see the same frames, cones, tinsel leads.....basically the same parts from the same shop and the same build......just with a different name stamped on it. Why the hell would that sub cost as much as a JL, or Kicker or Alpine, or some of the better subs??? Of course you will get a loud, plain looking, cookie cutter sub. If thats what you want, then pay alot less for it. You dont expect to snag a Benz for Chevy Impala cash do you? The chevy can be has with leather, power everything and all that, but you will see those same parts on all GM cars. The Benz is gonna cost more because of everything that goes into it. This is just an analogy, so dont flame. Anyhow, I think JL and (some of the other companies) charge more for their subwoofers because more went into them. There.....this IMHO.
Have a great day.

Wow you're smart. You just said the same thing 100's of people have been saying for years. Good job...

Although everyone hears things differently , there is a couple of ways to actually know what sounds real and what does not.

Go listen to as much live music as possible ... preferrably acoustic Jazz and Orchestra .... also live vocals. Saturate yourself with this experience and you will start to notice when things in reproduced music do not sound exactly right.

While this may sound elaborate , I reccomend finding a group of musicians .... as small as 3 or 4 musicians is just fine ..... Pay for a recording studio and engineer to produce ONE song for the group. If the group goes in well prepared , it can be done in just a few hours. You're looking at only a few hundred bucks ...... Go in the studio with them and LISTEN to everything LIVE and at the console's playback monitors ...

Once finished , you will know EXACTLY how this sounded ... you were there listening. It is a perfect reference for you from that day on.

Being a retired musician , I have my own CD's to use as a reference. This is invaluable to me for the rest of my life. I can plug in one of my own CDs , and KNOW immediately if ANY system is playing it right .....

ALRIGHT!!! THIS IS IT!!! Take a vehicle with unlimited amount of money to spend on it for sound. SQ/SQL/SPL, doesn't matter! For absolute best sound in any of those categories...JL....NOTHING JL, will be apart of that car. PERIOD. The w7 is a great woofer....wooptydoo. There amps are nice too, but who here is goin to tell me an Alpine amp will outlast say, IA 20.1, Arc or Tru-Tech.

You are a ****ing idiot. / of story.

Do you realize when it comes to all that, it is all VERY VERY install dependent. You can proceed to STFU now.

People are saying that the w7 is a sq sub, which I cannot agree with. I know three people who have had them, each in around 2ish cubes at 32 hz and every one gets my same vote. They are accurate, but not good and clean. I want to hear string bass, I won't get a w7.

I had a chance to listen to a w7 and it sounded ok, but what I hate is that it is expensive. My friend wanted me to listen to his 2-w0's and I said it didn't sound that good. He told me that they are jl's and they are the best subs period and nothing else is better. That mentality that people have really pisses me off, thinking JL audio is the best period.
