how to get/help someone stop smoking..

As stated she has to want to quit. Only suggestion I'd have is ask her if she would be willing to try taking zyban for say two months. She doesn't even have to want to quit. When I took the stuff I didn't even think about quitting...about a month into it I just quit havin the urge to smoke and stopped.

you can light a cigarette and blow the smoke into a paper towel. Do this while inhaling and another while just letting the smoke come into your mouth but not your lungs. The results are disturbing

The only way she will ever quit is if she wants to quit. If she doesn't, don't bother trying to get her to. I quit cold turkey back in Christmas of '04. I was a 5 year, pack-a-day smoker so I know what I'm talking about.
What prompted me to quit is thinking about how I would feel if I did quit and get a handle on my drinking. Once I was a week into it I knew I mad the right decision, I never felt healthier. If one can make it through the first 3 days, then one can quit for good. It's those first 3 that are the hardest.

And as another poster said, it's all mental. If you can somehow get her to make the decision to quit then it can be done. All she has to do is make up her mind. Hope she does.
shes afraid because she told me the other night that ever since she started caring about her self shes constantly gotten sick, etc...but before that she almost never got sick. ive told her that shed be amazed at just how much better she'd feel even after the 3rd day cold turkey. shes only 18 and she isnt too far from emphysema...

she has a problem with taking pills. she cant even take tylenol without puking it up a few minutes later...

It's amazing how there's so much evidence nowadays that proves how harmful smoking is, yet people still do it. In retrospect I don't even know why I started when I did. I guess to be cool or what not. The funny thing is now smoking isn't even "cool" anymore. In reality being a non smoker is the cool thing to do lol.

Yea I remember when I quit I was in a euphoric state. I had all kinds of energy and got into weight lifing and running. It was so cool knowing I was doing my lungs and the rest of my body right.

It's kind of asking a lot out of her to just quit cold turkey (even though she should and it would do her a lot of good), so instead maybe you might want to just see if she can go, say, 3 days. Tell her to just at least try and see how she feels afterward. You never know til you try right?

If she could at least manage that she'd find will power she never knew she had and would probably feel so good she wouldn't even want to turn back.

Bummer, that was the easy way.

Don't let her read this...but I didn't feel any different physically when I quit smoking //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

If you have the cash why not buy it for her and give that a shot. People seem to just really need to want to quit over anything. If they are not ready nothing will make them quit until they are.

I smoked for about 7 years, I have not lit one up in about 9 years.

The patch does help people though, my mother quit with it (note she quit too late and died of complications related to smoking) and so did my mother-in-law so that would be my first suggestion if pep talks are not working.

Wow 9 years man, right on!

I'm a bit older but I quit about a year a go. I've watched family members die of lung cancer and emphysema. Asthma runs hard in our family. Smoking asthmatics are almost rest assued of getting emphysema. Death is very slow. Take her to a hospice and visit with a few emphysema patients.

You have to have will and commitment to quit. Smoking is one of the most addictive (physically and mentally) drugs out there.

BTW I love this site http://www.nicorette.com/ great for smokers and people who know smokers.

Its already been mentioned, however, its all mental and it wont work if the person doesn't want to quit.

I don't believe in pills, patches, gums or anything. Ya that controls nicotine or whatever, but while a smoker may be addicted to nicotine maybe they also are addicted to the fact that they LIKE to smoke. Sometimes the addictive chemical isn't always the reason for something.. while I'm sure it plays a role, some people just like the act of smoking.

I quit about 5 times now, the latest being at 6am January 21, 2007. No cigarettes in 365 days which is a huge feat for myself and I will never smoke a cigarette again. And yes I'm proud of myself. Whoever said it earlier hit it on the head, to be a non-smoker these days is pretty **** cool.

Good luck to anyone trying to beat this habit; it can be done.

Michael

i have the cash but not if she just pukes it up later, or refuses to take it. we've talked about marriage, kids, etc and i told her that i didnt want her to die when shes 40 or 50 years old. i know shes serious about the future but its just like it has no bearing on her at all. i realize that its VERY addicting, but lots of ppl quit each day and go on to live better lives. she has to WANT to quit though...
