how to get/help someone stop smoking..

my girlfriend has pretty bad asthma and recently shes been having asthma attacks and they have been getting more frequent and more serious over the past couple weeks. she almost became unconscious earlier. is there anything i can do to encourage or help her stop without being pushy or controlling? so far ive offered to make deals with her and even buy her chantix or some other kind of pill to quit, but it doesnt work out...

cold turkey is the best.....its all mental. Anyone has the ability to overcome nicotine withdrawals you just have to get it into your head that you can't smoke anymore

i always tell my parents that when they die, i wont feel bad and that i wont have any guilt after i dont go to their funeral.

worked on my dad, moms cut back quite a bit

did that. i showed her pics of lungs with emphysema vs those from a non smoker and also showed her all the harmful chemicals and it didnt really have any effect i guess...

The only way she will ever quit is if she wants to quit. If she doesn't, don't bother trying to get her to. I quit cold turkey back in Christmas of '04. I was a 5 year, pack-a-day smoker so I know what I'm talking about.

What prompted me to quit is thinking about how I would feel if I did quit and get a handle on my drinking. Once I was a week into it I knew I mad the right decision, I never felt healthier. If one can make it through the first 3 days, then one can quit for good. It's those first 3 that are the hardest.

And as another poster said, it's all mental. If you can somehow get her to make the decision to quit then it can be done. All she has to do is make up her mind. Hope she does.
