Gain setting trouble

i installed 2 12in L7's and a ZX 1500.1 amp last weekend. i dont have my license yet so i havent been driving and listening to it a lot but when i do listen to it i have been just putting the gain about 1/2 with no bass boost and between 75-100 on the low pass. Also i havent been above 40/80 on the volume with everything on the headunit at 0. I went to set the gains today using a DMM and i disconnected the speakers and plugged the DMM set for AC in and put in a test tone and there was no reading at all. I tested the DMM in a wall socket and it worked fine. What could be the problem? Also what exactly is a clipped signal? What causes them? What damage can they cause? how can i prevent them? and with what i had the gains at before was i okay? Also what are the signs of clipping? Any suggestions or information will help. thanks

good settings on the amp im sure 1/2 gain should be ok but bttt

try burning another test tone cd

did u test at the speaker terminals? and were the negative speaker wires still connected?

yes i tested at the speaker terminal but the negative was disconnected also.. does it need to be connected still?
