Good news...I found your engine whine problem:

A) Using crappy stock ground through a harness.

B) Cargo net mount for ground in trunk????

I love the Ai-Net hook up and the dedicated ipod connection and not having any noise or problems with alpine, I love them.
The Ai-Net on my 9855 and 9853 has/had a lot of hiss in both my vehicles with the KCA-420i iPod adapter and with the iPod adapter that hooks up to the Ai-Net and the dock connecter on the iPod for iPod control vs HU control. When I switched to the Pioneer, the IP-Bus connector definitely proved itself to be better than the Ai-Net as far as noise. Speed for both sucks.

Good news lol never had any issues with those same hookups with alpine. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Also the pioneer is already gone.

Haha. I use the factory ground with no issues in my car, but i've had to make my own before for noise purposes in other installs. The plastic cargo net holder in the trunk for the ground is priceless.

i always was tempted to buy a pioneer because of how they look pretty nice. but i never brought one because of problems friends have had with them. i have ran jvc radios since my first radio and i dont plan on going another route

I'm on my first pioneer, a Premier DEH 980BT. 8-9 months, zero problems. The onlly complaints I have are some userfriendliness issues as compared to my Alpine, but the thing is packed with SQ and tuning features and has given me no problems. For Alpine, I would go with something from the older line when they used to put features in their head units. I have no interest whatsoever though in anything below the 9886. The other big names offer at least a few feature-rich head units to choose from, for Alpine serious SQ fans have the 9887 or else 9886/9884+ more money for IMPRINT.

Let's see... my 980 has 16 band EQ, time alignment, built-in bluetooth, 5 volt low resistance outputs, subwoofer phase control, just to name a few things. I know there are some awesome older Alpines but name anything in their line currently made below the 9887 that has ANY of that.

Last couple Alpines I had I started having error messages when trying to read my IPOD.

I have given up on Alpine and am liking Pioneers and Eclipses right now.

Yeah, the 880s skip like crazy when playing cds with heavy bass but if you use the ipod hookup the skipping goes away 100%.
