Blew my Sub after 1 day. Need advice.

You have to remember what was mentioned earlier, clipping. Most volume knobs turned to aroundish 70-75%ish (could be less could be more, but thats where ive found safe without scope and dmm), depending on HU of course, is where max preout volt is reached. Not 100%.

Plus, cant some amps only handle under a certain preout voltage? If over they put the amp in clipping very easily? Think I remember that correctly, idk long time ago. Been out of caraudio for a few years.

So mine is just special? I can honestly say that the volume significantly increases from 65-70, 70-75, and 75-80 is a minimal difference. I don't notice any distortion on almost all songs though, maybe after 75 some heavy metal songs sound a little stressed

Without testing with equipment you wouldn't know when it was really honestly clipping or not (within reason, obviously clipping when you hear it). No your head unit isn't just special lol

Read the JL website, 500W is considered "danger zone" for the W6 I believe their definition is something to the effect of "expect failure if you do this for too long.
He lives life on the edge. WELCOME TO THE DANGER ZONE BOOTY WARRIOR!

The only way the installer can be liable would be if they wired the Sub to 2 ohms, that will deliver the 500 Watts to the sub that can only handle 300-350 watts. If they wired it to 4 ohms, I doubt any damage could have been made but it is possible if max levels were set on the amp, bass levels etc.

Dude! damned! , you get a brand new sub and you run it a max levels? you need to give it at least 20 hours of low to mid levels to break it in, maybe that could have been the issue, to not let it break in.

This is some good information. Thanks. It seems like I jacked up the sub myself. I guess I misunderstood what the knob was for. I'm a fair dude, so I didn't wanna go harassing my installer if I'm the one who made the mistake. I knew enough to keep the head unit settings flat. As a matter of fact he did go over that with me. But not how to handle utilizing the bass knob. Not sure if that's enough to blame them or not though. Thanks to all the replied. I appreciate the help.
on fosgate amps the knob controls a 0-18db boost at 45hz when set to a low pass filter if your going to use it the manual states to never go past 3/4 I believe for a ported enclosure no matter what and that incorrect use will lead to woofer failure and or damage.
