A question for papermaker

You can't compare Drive motivation skill and intelligence between union and non-union workers I understand what you saying but I've seen a lot of Union hands not flat out don't know s*** and get carried along and vice versa I'm pretty much carry every f****** body I've ever worked with there's only a few people that can say hey look shut up and let me show you some s***. Just how the boat floats.
I really don't care much I'm there to do a job do a good job and pay my bills I'm try to be a decent person but other than that *** everything else.

My buddy does heating and air conditioning for a non union company but on some of the larger jobs they are dual contracted and he ends up working with a company that's union. He makes a killing when that happens because he gets union rate plus what ever the benefits package is paid into his check so he ends up making way more hourly then the union guys. He tells me all the time about days were he just hands them 50 bucks and says just go to lunch and come back at 3 to sign out because they just don't know **** and are in the way. With us that can't really happen with thier being so many different pieces of heavy equipment you have to either get certified to run a piece or if you put on your work card that you can run a piece of equipment and you get sent out on it. If the company calls the union and says you **** send some one else after 3 call backs your out.

It was a small family run company that did in ground pool instillation , land scaping , and fencing. Small company's like that it doesn't make sense to have union employees. We're union helps out is large company's that need slot of skilled employees not smaller company's that have 50 employees or less.
I think unions have a number of employees set minimum...or so.

I had a few job interviews with Boeing back in 2009, back when the financial meltdown kicked in. Glad I don't work there but at the same time, it would have been different for me since I know they 're union, being limited on the things you can do is BS. This was for a general machinist position. I do a lot of work at my job, get paid far less than those Boeing employees who work less and get paid more. Go figure...

Every unions different I don't know with Boeing if the union was just for Boeing employees or just a Machinist union. Like my union is only heavy equipment operators that's contractors hire as they need but my buddy works for that state government and thier union covers anybody from office workers to mechanics to laborers and is way different then mine. With us thier is no minimums I was working for a small company that was union they mainly did residential jobs but would bid on larger commercial jobs anything residential they we're allowed to use thier employees but anything commercial had to be union. I was the only operator working for them at the time but when anything commercial Came up they would call and request anywhere from 1 to 20 or how ever many people they needed. Actually the owner had it set up as 2 different companys the commercial one was union the residential was non now that I think about it. For me it was good and bad if residential was slow I would work for his commerical company as a forman but I couldn't run equipment because I wasn't union at the time even though he owned the equipment.

Some dept's at Boeing are union....I know the machinist there are. And from what I heard, they know jackshit compared to other machine shops. I think people expect that, just because they are the largest airplane company here, they expect to get paid a lot more than the average joe. Being overpaid and underworked....it doesn't make sense to me. There's a few places that folded up around here and they were union.

My local electrician union had mandatory 5 years in union after getting your journeyman and if you get laid off you can't do electrical work outside of the union

If you quit before before your 5 year commitment you have to pay back the union school which was around $100k (prorated on time in union)

But if you get in they pay well and take care of you

My brother is union and gets taken care of well enough

They might just be specialist one one type of machine making the same part everyday and that's whats needed from them compared to a Machinist that's trained on multiple pieces of equipment and can make anything. Being union doesn't mean your making more then other people doing the same job it's thier to make sure your not being taken advantage of and working for a fare wage.

On government jobs you always make prevailing wage I make $40 an hour minimum on a government job but I agree all our way just need to go up man we still getting spoon-fed

I thought electricians already made good $$...don't see why a union is needed?? There's a reason why too dealing with high voltage work, or low, whichever the person is into. Around here, it's not uncommon for electricians to be making 30+

That's dumb...being laid off then work a day or two later?? Might as well take sick/vac time off rather than being told your getting laid off.

I think your thinking of unions in the wrong way labor unions are like hiring halls say you own a construction company and you have anywhere from 5-20 jobs you can't afford to pay people all year round if you don't have work and if u keep hiring and laying people off no one is gonna work for you. If your union and you need 20 guys you can call up and request 20 guys if you need 50 just call up and say I need 50 when the Jobs up you can lay them off and they just put thier name back on a hiring list till the next company calls. A union with in a company is different they represent only the workers for that company and some times just demand to much for positions that are not skilled enough to warrant the pay. Some times companies give in to try and have a leg up at negotiating on the next deal on problem or they hold thier ground and people strike and it's usually about who can hold out longer the workers of company.

You can if you want it's up to you when you put your name back on the list you could wait a week a month when ever u want. When I first got in thier was days I was laid off called on my way home and was back out to work for another company the next day.

Good $$ yeah but I don't think I could ever deal with a day or two off in between working...is there a way to make up those lost days? Reason why I have a set schedule for a job for a large aerospace company. I have a family, wife, kids and mortgage to support.

Not really but a work day is 7-3:30 you can tell them if you can't work weekend or nights night work is a higher pay weekends are overtime so your on a set schedule and if a job is over night you'll know before hand not just sprung on you one day. The union does have a supplemental program they will give you some money to offset the difference but it's not = to 2 days work. Most jobs are a year to up to 10 year projects so you will know months in advance when the lay off is gonna be. The smaller week to month jobs are usually for the apprentices that are lower skill and on a easy peace of equipment like a dirt roller and end dump. I have been on the same job for 2 years now and the only layoffs were from dec. The Friday before Christmas till Jan 2nd the company take a holiday break but I have been with this company for 5 years and usually the next job is lined up or we have multiple jobs going at one time so if your good and mesh well with everyone u won't get laid off just sent to the next job.
