I guess it depends on your career but, as a heavy equipment operator that was non union then took a pay cut to join as a apprentice for 4 years lt was the best decision of my life. I make more hourly, awesome benefits, retirement package, and the union dues are pennies compared to what you receive in return. Also working for both sides non and union I can tell you the operating engineers are the only people I would feel confident in being on a job with for safety, production, and skill. Also with prevaling wage we keep the hourly rate for non union operators up instead of being taken advantage if by scab contractors. When I was non union winter time ment layoff and unemployment till spring but since I switched I have never been off more more then the week after Christmas.

In the south and esp louisiana it's a right to work state. Yep..

I really don't have much experience with right to work coming from the north east but I do know we have locals in every state including right to work states and our members are way better off then if they were non union. Having met and worked with members from all over the country from Cali to Maine. One of the only times I was in a right to work state on a pipe line the only difference was that the contractor could higher non union and the union members had the option to pay dues. From my experience the contractor wanted to pay a higher rate for union employees because of our production and skill compared to the non union employees they had in the past. I have no problem paying the dues we have meeting monthly that go over how all out dues are spent and yearly elections for our senior members so I know that what I pay in is benifitng me my family and my fellow union employees.

The place where I work just got rid of the Union it was either you stay here or you stay with the union and you don't have a job guess what they stay with the company and the company gave them more money than the union was going to.

Here in pretty much goes by how Prestigious/big the company is that you work for if you work for Shell, Chevron and those big companies like that you are making big dollars I mean the union came and compete but like a little company I work for I would probably be better off in a union but I still get a retirement and great benefits and I still get paid decent I'm fixing to get a raise because I'm the f****** man around there though. Hehe
