2nd vehicle options

The grand cherokee's are heavy, no matter how you drive it isnt too pretty. You run about 19-20mpg at 60 mph. If you drive 70 it goes down to about 13-14.

I owned a 97 grand and now an 01 and both of em have got about the same mpg my 01 is the 4.7 L and my 97 was the 4.0

I can haggle. Id rather replace clutches than have a whole transmission being rebuilt. Its fairly cheap considering the alternative.
Very true, its possible that thats all the problem could be. I also hear you about 4x4 not being a necessity. But being in Michigan, especially more north, it probably wouldnt be a bad idea lol.

You'd be surprised what front wheel drive and snow tires can accomplish. If you don't go with a 4x4, buy a set of steelies and install some snow tires on them for the winter. As far as MPGs go with Jeeps, I average about 13-14 in the summer and 10-11 in the winter. I've got the 5.2 and the NV249 AWD transfer case, for now. I picked up an NV242 to swap in but I'm not expecting any better mileage with 2 wheel drive, just less front tire wear.

wow that is terrible. i got an 03 4.7 HO and get 20-22 highway doing 60 and about 15 16 if im a little heavy on the petal or in a city

Most, if not all, of my driving is city driving. When I get it on the highway, if I trail in a semi's draft going about 50-55, I've averaged 26 MPG. That was a long trip from Schererville IN to South Bend IN and back. I was extremely impressed. It took forever though. It's hard to maintain that kind of speed on the highway when people are flying around you. The semi driver had to have known I was hypermileing in his draft too. It worked to my advantage so I don't really care. On a different note, I didn't buy my Jeep thinking I'd get good mileage out of it. It's a heavy, V8 powered, AWD vehicle. On top of that, I run about 4 inches of lift now with solid control arms (a lot of added weight) and all terrain tires. I can't wait to ditch my alloy rims for steelies with bigger, knobbier tires on them. I bet I'll be averaging under 10.

ya i wasnt thinkin about a 2.5 inch lift kit for my jeep so i can get some nice aggressive tires for it not sure if im gonna tho. dont really want to hurt the gas millage. and i got to get the audio system installed first.

If you don't wheel it, don't lift it. The adverse effects on MPG and wear on other components aren't worth it. If you do wheel it, MPGs aren't your concern and you should be used to wrenching things that break. By all means, lift it. Although, they are fairly capable vehicles even in stock form. Mine surprised me more than a handful of times when it was stock.
