In vented setups, thermal limits generally come into play before mechanical ones (assuming you have your SSF set correctly). So Im not sure what you mean by they wont take it mechanically.
I wasn't suggesting your sub should be built differently, I was suggesting the average consumer is stupid.

With a soft suspension, mechanical limits can be reached quite quickly in a ported enclosure (i.e. putting the driver in an enclosure it wasn't meant to be in). But in general (especially if a woofer can be ported or sealed) if you port a driver that can be ported and stay above tuning you can run the coil into trouble with too much power. What a lot of people do is run them below tuning at full power and cause mechanical failtures. But in our case, the suspension is too soft for high-power vented applications.

They can be, very true. I'm still amazed at how it happens when someone sends a Mag in for repair - it's a 2.2" long, 3" diameter coil with a stiff suspension and people still cook them. Jake from Sundown uses a pair of them (ported) to test his 3000D's. And people still cook them somehow.

And that average consumer who sends you in a burnt Mag, if asked, would probably say "I only set my gain to 3/4, I wasn't even feeding it full power!"
