Facing a sub up do to space limitations

I have a 12" sub in a ported box that I plan to install behind the passenger seat in a 2007 ranger ext cab. Now due to the size and shape of the box , if I put the sub facing the front it is extremely close to the back of the seat. I am pretty sure it will touch when flexing it is so close, is it ok to place the sub facing up ?? I am extremely new to car audio and couldn't find a definative answer on Google.

Let me provide you with an answer regarding the installation of your subwoofer.

That will work fine as long as you have the room. Bass is considered non-directional below 80 Hz. Given how close that driver is to your ears, you may have to lower your crossover point a little.

What type of listening do you plan to do?

I listen to almost everything. The box is 18" thick at the bottom, 15" at the top 20.5" wide and 14" high which is why it gets very close to the back of the seat. Facing it upwards would give 4" more room between the box and seat.

Gotcha'. My advice is more toward balanced listening (trying to simulate a good home system). If you are into just slamming the bass, being able to hear the source may be less of a concern.

I do both, so I have a dedicated sub volume control. Crank it up when needed, back it down when needed.

Pointing the subwoofer up will be fine, it will depend on cabin room overall, but I wouldn't worry bout that. Use your ear, it will ultimately depend on what your box but don't stress it, just bump that sh** !

I use reference songs to play in friends vehicles to see if they get a good range in bandwidth for they're set up.

I had my sub firing up in a BP4 in a 1996 Ranger SuperCab 3.0L V6.
