Word on the street is that there were only @ 200 big gap motors ever made. Quite sought after for the ability to throw nearly any coil in them. Very nice.

Yep. I had a few and sold them since the small gap motor gains about .7 to 1.0 dB. Found out a little later talking with Shocker Mike that that was all he ever had made... I'd have kept mine had I known they were so scarce.

a whole db!? deuym, what does the tighter gap effect to help acheive this?

The attractive force of magnets is inverse square of the distance between their poles, as I can tell it's a bit more complicated as they get closer together, but generally speaking the forces are not simply doubled by halving the distance, but squared. Hold 2 magnets apart and bring them together, notice the force gets dramatically stronger the closer you bring them together, the effect is more dramatic the closer and closer you bring them together. The tradeoff is how much coil you can throw in the gap (the ammount of metal in the coil = thermal handling), and of course if it's too tight when the coil expands from heat it'll seize up in the gap. Also when you assemble them the margin of error is almost nil. Still though, throw a big 8 layer coil on a big gap motor and it'll go really nice and take plenty of power.

If OP was local I'd own this by now.
