will JLs gain setting tech work with other amps

it says turn your deck up 3/4, turn the bass, treble, loud off and set your gains etc

but what happens if i turn my deck up 3/4 and turn my loud and bass ON, wont this be over powering my sub now

Not really because you will still never really listen to it daily at 3/4 volume. And on music it will not be producing full power. You will still be safe.

I normally set it with it on, but do not use 0db tones...

No.

If you set your gain with that stuff on, you'll just end up setting your gain to a lower setting since the deck will be putting comparatively more voltage to the amp via the preouts (and the preouts may be clipping, depending on the deck and such).

However, if you set the gains with those things turned off, then turned them on afterwards you would end up clipping the amp.

so how am i supposed to do it, turn bass, treble and loud off and set the gain and never turn all that stuff on

Set the gain with all HU settings set to how you would normally have it. And the 3/4 of the way thing is bullshit, put the HU volume to the highest level you would listen to it normally. Do not exceed this volume once the gain is set, or increase any HU settings as this may induce clipping.

phat what does clipping make does it damage your HU can it damge sub it can damage amp right my friend has a pioneer 8600mp with 3 12in Kicker Solo L7 in a sealed box for his mazda and the gain is more than half way but he doesnt go past 15 on the Hu is that good mine is less than half i have a 12in L7 in a kicker prefab box with a 1.5 farad cap and a pioneer 6700mp amp is kenwood kac x521 bridged at 2ohms

Clipping is a segmented signal being set out by the amplifier that WILL eventually damage your equipment. It occurs when you are trying to get more power out of the amp then it was/is designed to and capable of putting out.

It can not damage your head unit, unless it is the HU that is clipping...

And no one can tell you where to set the gain, or what volume to turn it up to, etc... You need to set your gain properly relative to your install and then you will not have to worry about it.

3/4 volume is recommended b/c the majority of HU pre-amp outputs will clip at full volume. 3/4 is a good mix of high voltage w/o clipping.

I'm sure there are hu's that clip below 3/4 and some that don't clip at all, but it's a reasonable recommendation, and definitely not "BS".
