Yeah, because what we're discussing isn't even single-payer health care. It's a public options, which is WAY different. Basically means setting up a tax-funded insurance company, as opposed to socializing medicine.
But let's even say the proposal WAS universal health care a la Canada or France. Sure that'd make your taxes go up, but that would be MORE than off-set by the fact that the chunk of your money normally going toward your private insurance (be it deducted from your paycheck or something you pay monthly). Your taxes might go up $1000 but you'd be keeping about $2300 that normally went toward insurance.

well I think you misunderstood, i this statement was not related to the previous post about the canadian health care system. Honestly globally countries feel sad for the US and our health care system. American's think that the other countries are inferior and we are the end all be all, but peoples way of life in other nations far exceed ours. In some countries they have free delivery doctors. meaning just as we call up to order pizza, they call a doctor and they make free house calls and if its something they cant handle they send an ambulance to get to take you to the hospital and guess what its free. Most of my family on my mothers side lives in Toronto and they maybe pay 15% tax but again dont have to pay for anything medically. On visit to an ER or surgery can cost you your salary. My g/f mother had a kidney transplant and was in the hospital for 4 days and thebill was over $200k. I'd pay more taxes for no health care cost in a heart beat

I never said I want people to starve to death. If people starve to death its their own fault. Not mine. If people were given an incentive to get off their ***, like the threat of starving to death, they would probably do something about it.
If it were going to be handled by the taxpayers, it would have to be handled by a government agency.

It's more the fact that it isn't complete. Having a limited government-funded insurance pool just creates another insurance company, which may still fall prey to problems in limiting coverage thanks to the light amount of money it actually has to work with, as opposed to full-on single-payer that just trucks along adjusting taxes and such as needed to cover everyone. It's an odd hybrid.

At least that's my feeling.

I'm curious, how would you handle those who choose not to work?

I would propose we provide a minimal assistance program that would provide for bare necessities such as food and shelter.

Not a comfortable lifestyle by any means but enough to keep people from starving to death.

What would you do about people whom your government bureaucrat has decided dont want to work but have children?

Do you want children to starve to death because of their parents?

I personally think they should do away with some of the HIPPA requirements and allow insurance companies to adjust premiums based on the client. We have no problem with discounts for safe drivers. Why not discounts for healthy people?

My father is in terrible health...why shouldn't he pay more for insurance? Even he thinks he is getting over on the system.
