All these programs are administered by the states, but funded with federal dollars matching state contributions. The amount the feds contribute is considerably more than the states.
Gotcha...wasn't sure how exactly they worked.

I noticed that section8 was handled on a real local level...like city/town.

Learn something everyday.

i just like fukking with people who still use the old arguments based on AFDC against TANF as if they were applicable or valid.

Come on people AFDC has been gone for over a decade, if you are going to use political rhetoric, at least stay current.

I won't quibble with you but I think they should take loans instead of handouts...I borrow the money for school and pay rent. I know others that borrow for both...not really fair to those who don't fuck up their lives and do the right thing.
If you have a family it takes a little more than borrowing money for school and rent. I have friends that still needed handouts while going to school fulltime, and working fulltime. The problem is the economy, not the person. That pull yourself up by your bootstraps is bullsh*t if you can't afford boots. Many of the people on welfare are there because of a poor education system. Our country tends to invest money in the wrong things, like wars instead of education, or incarceration rather than rehabilitation or social programs. Not everybody on welfare ravishes the thought of being on welfare.

You are absolutely right. Which is why I will finish graduate school before I start a family.

The economy isn't that bad...Do you actually ever look at GDP growth, retail sales, or a variety of other economic indicators? If not, I can send you a spreadsheet that shows improvements in our economy.

People are making more money than they ever have. I am sorry that you did not chose an occupation that does not allow you to hop on the train...Furthermore, if you are like icetea and blame "the poor Michigan economy"...that's not a super great excuse...a significant portion of my money comes in no matter where I live.

I live in TN, where we have some low quality schools with a graduation rate of ~80% (I am sure you can find lower if you tried). But most of my education was pursued of my own accord. And I wasn't born wealthy...I am the son of a factory worker and a lunch room lady in a local high school. I am a forward thinker and folks who knock up *****s in HS are not.

I would wait for your reply, but you do understand how a direct injection of $100B into the economy via various defense contracts vs. a $100B in school spending if you are wanting to boost the economy in the near term.

First of all... where did I say that I was the person that needed the hand out. I don't know what the makeup of your community was, but there are a lot of factors involved in stunting the growth of certain communities. If you want to look at statistics, then you'll notice that there is a correlation between poverty and pregnancy rates. The fact that you had two parents with working jobs says something. There are plenty of areas where mass lay-offs. Don't think I'm saying people shouldn't work hard. I'm saying that there are examples of people that do all that they can and it still isn't sufficient. There's a difference between being in the lower-middle class and being impoverished. It's hard to get out off a certain economic bracket when the system is built to keep people in debt: credit cards and loans. I'm not a major in economics... far from it... biochem and molecular bio. But I'm telling you what I have observed. Nobody can based the world off their personal experiences. So we have two cases, what I've noticed, and what you've noticed. This is why there are disparities in any argument and debate is good to foster new ideas on how to solve problems. Work harder is not the best solution when the economy plays a part. No matter what statistics say, pockets don't lie.

I think we need to think long term. I think if we made larger investments in education the results would not be immediate, but the future would definitely be brighter because we would have a greater wealth of intelligence to find new ways to bolster the economy. Technology is taking the place of the type of job your father worked. Manufacturing jobs are either being outsourced, or they're finding machines that can do the work that a person once performed. Machines will work for lower wages and don't expect promotions I suppose.

Cant we all just be thankful for what we do have?

We are the wealthiest country in the world and the reason the rest of the world hates America is because all everyone does is complain about what we dont have instead of being so thankful for all the things we do have.

If we're the wealthiest country... then I don't know where China stands since we're in debt to them. When we get that paid off, then we'll have a chess match to see who can have the nomenclature "wealthiest."
