And that's the truth.
About 3 years ago:
My first system was 2 12" sony xplod's in a prefab sony box, circuit city sold it as one unit. I can't remember the model number but it was a black carpeted box with the 2 subs and an aero port on the side. I bought it on black friday for $80 (only reason I bought it), along with a sony xplod head unit and amp.
Now, I didn't know sh*t about subs/stereos back then, so I had the sub gain on the headunit to +10, and on the amp to about 90% of the way. I'm sure I was clipping the hell out of the signal, but the subs still lasted close to 2 years with me bumping at full volume every day. When I say "lasted", I mean until I sold them and bought my new audioque sub lol. I've talked to the person that's bought them and they're still running good.
The sony amp I bought would get very very hot after about 20 minutes of play-time, so I installed some computer fans onto it (4 in total) on a little home-fabricated case. It looked professional and worked pretty good, but I'm still sure I could've cook an egg on the amp. Never went into protect, though
With all that being said, I wouldn't discount sony as total dogsh*t. But now that I'm running an actually semi-respectable system, it really is night-and-day.
