When to upgrade electrical system

i would like to know, typically, when would one need to upgrade for HO alt. or battery ?

let's say my sub runs at 1500w rms and 2 tweeter, 2 mid of 60w rms each...

i would do the big 3 for sure since it's cheap but would i be alright with the stock alt and battery ?

My alt gives 160 amp by the way.

so if i go, 1740 / 12V = 145A

i guess i'll be short on that, right ? i know it's a gross calculation but, am i gettin it right ?

Lol. You need some more balance. More power to your mids, less power to yours sub. When you throw a sub into a box, you get a thing called rise and you lose a significant amount of rms. so if your amp is rated at 1500rms at 1ohm and your wired at 1 ohm. your probably seeing around 1k realistically. So factor that into power needs.

im running a ton of gear. 150x4, 100 x2, 1000x1, all off a stock 80amp alt and a wal mart battery but im VERY careful with my voltages. i have a volt meter integrated into my dash now. Basically i can pound all i want but i have to turn it down at lights or on hot days i have to be careful. It depends on your gear as well, amp efficiency, topology, as well as build quality comes into play. I know that if i was as hard on some crappy gear as i am on my gear, it woulda toasted a long time ago. Good amps can handle lower voltages without blowing up.

Good, thanks.

i already changed my mind on the setup i'm gonna use.

i saw the deal on those HDC3 10'' and went crazy....but i think i'll go for Dayton RSS315HO-4 12''.....750w instead of 1500w. Will be plenty enough for my needs. And will be more balanced since i plan to go for Hertz HSK165 i think and ditch the crossovers. I'll go active with miniDSP.

Do you think that would be a good balanced setup ? Feel free to suggest anything else !

It never hurts to have more power then you will ever use. That keeps it clean with plenty of headroom for dynamics. You can always take away out put.

As for upgraded electrical. Monitor your voltage, it will let you know when it's time. Make sure the amps are set clean and grounds are good so you don't get false readings.

Yep, and I'm an Electrical Engineer by degree. So that adds to my credibility in approving 100% with LosIsATool. I'm doing an install and just ordered a little plug into your power outlet (the PC term for them today, was cigarette lighter things) voltmeter to monitor my system' electrical power requirements to see if I should start thinking seriously about doing the Big 3.

No you don't and your not. Quit BS'ing us.

OP, it's really up to you when to upgrade the electrical. But really, most people do the big 3, or even install an aftermarket alt or even batteries before they even install any audio equipment.

No they don't. Millions have installed their own car audio systems and never do the Big 3. I have before!

Looks fake to me....even if it's not, your posts make me doubt your grasp of anything further than basic EM concepts. Your only platform is the fact you have a "degree"

...Talk about an appeal to authority approach...talk the talk or bullsh1t walks.

I know more about EM radiation than you ever will! And that is a documented FACT!!

OP I would do the big 3 and upgrade to a decent agm battery. Careful with your gains and watch your voltage.

If you decide to go bigger later or your current setup can't handle the load an alt would be the next step.

Unlikely since my official job title is Scientist with Radar Specialty //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I actually got a job dealing with EM...howabout you?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/suave.gif.858fc102f7646e678ee8af7e1fbc41d1.gif

Another incorrect post...what a "shocker" :p

I changed careers. Got tired of the volatility in the IT field and became an RN. Wanna see my nursing diploma? ;-)

Eat a **** instead.

That's because a lot of those don't know much about car audio (uneducated, much like yourself). They think adding amps, subs, speakers is good enough then hop onto a forum asking why their lights dim. But...your an electrical engineer so you should know right.
