What's the problem here?

So my friend brings over his car because according to him it sounds like poop.

He was right.

Two 10 inch Kenwood Exceleron subs in an MTX bandpass box. I had given him the subs, which I had in a sealed box that I had made and they sounded perfectly fine. He wanted a different box, so he found the bandpass box used online.

The ports are behind the subs, not in front.

The only conclusions I can come to are;

Either the subs weren't made for that box and/or the ports being in the back instead of the front is making it sound like poop.

Any additional thoughts or does that sound about right?

There's your problem... Bandpass boxes if some one is going to use them need to be made for the speakers they are using in it.

What amp is he running though?

....and check the simple- like.......are the ports tuned? or just the holes/ends and no tubing? i've seen alot of pre-fab band-pass boxes without any port tubing installed/ tuned....... in fact, i just saw a pf box the other day that got ripped out sounding like *** because someone scalloped half the tubing to clear the subs...

Yeah it's definately the box.

He came over today and I put the subs back in the sealed box and they were fine.

So here's his next question that I didn't know the answer to. "Any idea what subs should go in that bandpass box?"

P.S. I'm not building him a ported box for those subs, he's to cheap to pay someone to do it and to dumb to do it himself.

And he doesn't like the sealed box.....I guess beggars can be choosers.

invert subs into front enclosure the larger one subs firing into small ported chamber see if that helps
Yep, that was my first thought, but unfortunately the subs wouldn't fit in that way.

ive seen dual brand subs that come in the crap bandpass box where the front is all lights and the back has 2 big ol port holes giving the subs like .2 cubic ft each with no cushion.....horrible....no idea why you would want that :/

That box would sound good as it was hitting the bottom of the dumpster. That's the only scenario where it will sound decent. He either needs to pony up some cash or learn to like the output from the sealed box.
