First one I seen explode was actually a paint can sized cap at Mid west nationals (some lake by chicago) That was in the Boss armored show truck..I seen a tray full of 8v's batteries catch on fire and had to be rolled outside at a USACI finals was in either 99 or 2000....seen an optima yellow top leak out a wholllllle crap load of whitish acid from around one of its terminals (it was oozing) trying to power 2 of those audiobahn rack mount amps sometime around 2004, i have also seen the cases of bat cap 300's and 400's after they went up...from what I hear they are about as loud as a full scale M-80 but with more shrapnel //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blow_up.gif.f2a780e8b12ae09e264cb01720b8dca2.gifMy guess is rapid discharging coupled with slow recharging with too high of a voltage (from the alt).
It could also be a load issue with that particular battery seeing more current draw. Hank (2000lade) had 2 bad batteries and I believe one of them was a bad cell.
I've only seen one battery literally explode and that was at 2008 db drag finals. Team Baldman accidentally unhooked one of the battery charger leads with the charger still on.
I was all the way across the convention center when I heard the bang. Ridiculously loud.
When that battery blew up I thought somebody had blown a tire or something (heavy vehicles can be bad for tires //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif )First one I seen explode was actually a paint can sized cap at Mid west nationals (some lake by chicago) That was in the Boss armored show truck..I seen a tray full of 8v's batteries catch on fire and had to be rolled outside at a USACI finals was in either 99 or 2000....seen an optima yellow top leak out a wholllllle crap load of whitish acid from around one of its terminals (it was oozing) trying to power 2 of those audiobahn rack mount amps sometime around 2004, i have also seen the cases of bat cap 300's and 400's after they went up...from what I hear they are about as loud as a full scale M-80 but with more shrapnel //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blow_up.gif.f2a780e8b12ae09e264cb01720b8dca2.gif
I'm no electrical engineer, but I think it has to do with current flow.why would unhooking a lead while the battery is charging make it blow up?
well i'm taking DC theory right now and i don't claim to be a genius but current flows from negative to positive... i guess this is a question for the teacher...I'm no electrical engineer, but I think it has to do with current flow.
Current flows in through the positive lead and out through the negative. Since the negative was unhooked, all that current was flowing in with no place to go. Thus...explosion.
I don't know if that's right, but that's my best guess. I'll wait for someone smarter than me to chime in. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
If he did unhook the negative before the positive current wouldn't even flow into the battery at all since theres not a complete circuit between the battery and charger.I'm no electrical engineer, but I think it has to do with current flow.
