What causes an exploded battery?

well i'm taking DC theory right now and i don't claim to be a genius but current flows from negative to positive... i guess this is a question for the teacher...
If he did unhook the negative before the positive current wouldn't even flow into the battery at all since theres not a complete circuit between the battery and charger.
Hell I don't know what he did. I wasn't standing there. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

All I know is they unhooked one of the charger leads with the charger still on and the battery exploded.

There's gotta be some explanation as to why.

Does it matter that perhaps he unhooked the positive first?

No, no it doesn't...

Well it had something to do with the battery charger, I know this for certain.
Maybe the positive lead hit the chassis with the charger still on?

But would that cause the battery to explode like that?
Maybe that bat cap gives off gas when its charged, and when he took the charger off it sparked and lit the gas.

That is more likely than removing the improper lead. I've removed the positive first and the negative when charging the battery, never had any exploding batteries.

To address the battery explosion due to cable removal, has anyone ever noticed the spark created by breaking the current flow?

when you charge a battery quickly, it produces a large amount of Hydrogen gas. I am sure you all can put 2 and 2 together:D

That pic of the Batcap that exploded looks like it is filled with capacitors and not battery cells. If those are small battery cells, then they look like dry cells. Either way, there should be no gassing. Even with a lead acid battery, most of the batteries out today are VSLA types which should not gas unless the seals are broken. I am not sure how that would have happened with just removing one of the charging cables. This one has me puzzled.

EDIT: Just found out that these 8400s are made up of a bunch of Cyclon cells which are lead acid 2v cells.

the lead acid batteries, even with the caps for converting the gas to water, when charge/discharged quickly will vent.

The stories described above are people pushing batteries to their extremes and crazy shit will happen:D

edit: and even with the sealed batteries, the temp inside can increase to a point of overpressure and case failure

I believe you're correct, I took Electronic Principles and we we're taught the same //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
