The bottom portion of your thread is right, if you don't have any tools. But, the gain does not control the amps volume, neither does it regulate how much power the amp pushes, it is simply there to match the output w/ the h/u.I heard by many people the gain control is simply controlling your amps volume...
You'll get clipping and distortion LONG before the "needle stops moving".
