What are gains?

Do you have a scope?

Put a test CD in. Use 1000 Hz for main amps, 45-50 Hz for subs. Basic procedure is turn the HU up until just before it distorts. Or all the way up if there's no speakers on the HU. Then adjust amp gains until either they clip or you reach max power that the speaker can handle, whichever comes first. A voltmeter or scope is required for the latter.

That'll be the highest setting you can get away with. Turn them down from there to achieve the balance you like.

If you have kazaa or morpheuos you can find it online. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I have the Bass Mekanik sonic overload cds i got a while back. It's at this link: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?DID=7&PartNumber=510-315

Is that ok i think the closest to 45-50hz is track Track 7 disc 2. Will this work in checking for clipping. I know I have to have the voltmeter set to ac 50V and increase the gain untill the needle stops moving then it shows a clipping signal.

Is that right? Does anyone suggest any other tracks? I don't wanna //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/nono.gif.eca61d170185779e0921b0faa9704973.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif messup my JL 10wOs I just bought.

I heard by many people the gain control is simply controlling your amps volume...

Turn your stereo to 3/4 volume and adjust the gain till your subs max out then turn it down a little from there.

The bottom portion of your thread is right, if you don't have any tools. But, the gain does not control the amps volume, neither does it regulate how much power the amp pushes, it is simply there to match the output w/ the h/u.

You'll get clipping and distortion LONG before the "needle stops moving". You gotta use your ears, or a scope.
With a 4 ohm 10W0 you could adjust for 22 volts rms. That's 125 watts, as much as the speaker is rated for. If your amp won't put out that much then turn it up till it sounds like crap then back off till it sounds good. Tough to do without a scope.

I setup my 2 -8ohm JL 10wOs to my sony xplod 2150gsx 760w (380w x1 bridged). I put the hu to 3/4 and then turned up the gain till distorted then down a little less than half way.

I noticed that one of the speakers sounds like it's being tapped by a nail on the dust cap.

I thought I was clipping so I went down just a bit more on the gain and it stopped. The wierd thing is that the other speaker wasn't doing that.

My hu is a factory one and has no numbers to make sure where i'm at. I got it to sound clean and then I setup the speakers.

I think that i'm riding the volume because I turn it down a notch and the taping goes away.

Anyway should both these speakers need 250w rms combined. If i have them wired in parallel and brided isn't that 190w running both speakers. Can anyone explain any of this?

thanks

Your adjustment procedure sounds fine. The only thing I can think of that one speaker sounded funky is that the installation also has a big affect on speaker performance. Like, are both enclosures EXACTLY the same.

the independent enclosures are the same. sealed with .8 cubic ft. I'm thinking I may have gotten a bad speaker. I'm gonna try it one more week and if it doesn't go away it's going back. The other speaker doesn't make the tapping sound.

Yes i know that's what i was planning on. Unfortunately the rvca's are a little difficult to gain access to. My other thought was to wrap a wire...

That's nothing but an annoyingly common phrase to try to sound smart. Don't say "gain is not a volume knob" until you can explain how it differs...
