weird assed L7 problem

I was having problems with what I thought was my amp, but just got back from some testing. found out that the amp is fine, but something weird's going on with my L7.

what I did first was switched RCA cables to make sure they weren't at fault, and they weren't. Then, for some reason I can't tell you, I decided to push the cone of the sub in a little bit to see if there was resistance, and WHAM, it smacked me in the hand:eek: then, it started working flawlessly. No whining/scratching/bad noises.

So I naturally looked like //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif Then, turned the head unit off, then back on. No sound from the sub. Push in a little, and sound. Tried different scenereos about 10 times, and half the time it came right on, half the time I had to touch the sub. I could actually just touch the rubber surround and indent it maybe 1/16th of an inch and it'd start playing again. I'm happy the amp's working, but now I'm worried about my sub:crap:

I will be pulling the sub out of the box right now to make sure no wiring is messed up. Any ideas what the hell is going on, i'ld like to hear em:cool: Again, no weird noises from the sub, no weird smells/ actions. All looks perfectly fine.

Dad's buddy said to hook up to a 1.5volt batt and make sure it moves in and out properly. He's worried the voice coil ripped from the surround? I think that's what he said. I'm pretty new to car audio, and i've still got tons to learn //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

d2 voice coil 12'' L7 wired into 1 ohm if it matters. I'd estimate it was getting 500 watts max. cheap 1500 watt Crunch amp, gain set at 50%, head unit at most +3 bass of 6. any more info, i'll be ready to answer. have a multimeter to test if needed.

thanks

Tinsel Leads?
x2, watched the same thing happen to a guys old Comp 12. His was the tinsels had been torn/melted/otherwise broken before and it was loose/about to come in half. Moving the cone just gave it enough to make a connection. Usually after that the movement of the sub is enough to keep the circuit going. Tinsels would be my first thing.

well, just checked out all 4 tinsels. I'm no expert at all, but they looked fine to me. None looked melted, and all were still in the rubber ''casing'' for lack of a better term like I thought they should. The only thing I noticed was on two, I could see the actualy wire for about 1/16 or 1/8th of an inch exposed, like the ''casing'' had worn off.

Is this going to be a problem? If it is, what would you suggest doing? I CAN solder pretty good, but really don't want to risk doing it inside my sub. I can easily tape it up tight, or possibly get some shrink tubing to form around, but I don't think that'll work since i'd have to slice it.

another probably stupid question. While reviewing the wiring, I noticed that the main speaker wire, the one that goes to the terminal on teh box, goes to the + on voice coil 1, and the - on voice coil two. My thinking is that it should be to the same + and - on the same coil, then wired to the other coil. Off to look at the wiring wizard //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Edit: nevermind, woofer wizard told me.

well, might as well post the answer to this problem. Turned out it WAS the tinsils, ended up having to re-solder two of the 4. Two ended up tearing off completely, just took a while to finally die. Hate finding questions related to mine with no answers.
