Underpowering Speaker/sub Test (same test as jman kinda)

It doesn't matter either way as it won't damage anything and will be a good reference to people who think that the signal won't let the sub cool properly.
ok, you are an audiophile nerd //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif I like that bro //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Ok, now clip the shit out of the signal and then redo your experiment and show people that it's not the shape of a signal.
Better yet, just play this file through your test rig left as it's set up right now:

http://media.putfile.com/45hz-clpped

That's an extremely clipped 45hz signal. It's pretty close to a pure square wave.
I think a lot of people are confused about the term "underpowered" vs sending a woofer "low power"

I can clip the low wattage single to my focals, just as much as someone with higher power can clip the single to a higher powered woofer.

now if I were to switch my focals out for a 18" Fi woofer, sending no where near the power the woofer needs, while it can still play fine, and being "underpowered" I can still clip that low wattage single to that 18" and heat it up pretty good.

Wouldn't a simpler test have been to just turn the volume down???? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I would "think" that even a clipped signal at a very low power level wouldn't hurt most decent subs. Time for you to do another test //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Same here on the HT front, only feed each RL-P with 400watts as that's MORE than enough to damage my house...

yeah yeah i forgot Nick designed the sub to be Idiotproof //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

It was either using a mag, a type r, or an eDuh. I chose the mag because i wanted people that were a "believer" of the myth to think i was nuts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

You actually did a test to prove that LESS watts WONT blow a speaker? lawl?

I mean, thanks for proving it and all, I guess. But if anyone out there really needed this sort of proof, on this subject, we should launch that person into outer space.

watts = power in real world environment.

since when do you bump in space? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

edit: i just now understood what you meant. yes shoot the idiots to outerspace please

Good stuff mang //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
i bet the only reason you entered this thread was cause you saw your name in title

It MUST have been some automotive forum or something. IME a lot of engine guru's don't know a thing about high powered audio (but believe they're experts).

If it's a car audio forum they should be shut down.

It will heat up no more than when it is fed the same amount of power that is contained in a square wave of similar amplitude.

People seem to think that a square wave is evil and they don't understand that it caries extra power with it due to the harmonics that are created.

Did you seriously spend all this time just to prove something that is blatantly obvious? If someone seriously thinks that a low power clean signal sent to a sub damages it, then they don't deserve to own any audio equipment.

I blew my first sub, a Kicker L7, with only 500W. I was stupid back then and no doubt sending it a horridly clipped signal. I remember taking it in to a local audio shop and having them tell me that it's a common problem to underpower a sub, and that is what lead to it blowing.

...sad

I am not a know-it-all. this(underpowering theory) is something that has already been proven, but i felt needed to be proven again.

it was a car audio forum persay, but has other categories too
