Type R - WTF?

I am going to try the paper trick when I get home and see if there are any leaks. If there are, I will look to fix those and see if that changes anything. If that is not theproblem, I think I am going to look at getting a ported box for 'em. Thanks for all the feedback and help.
Um, are you using perfab boxes by any chance?

interesting, i also got a pair dual 4 ohms and i got two wired down two 1 ohms, output is VERY quiet, i suspect this has to do with my set up and i will get to trouble shooting tommorow but this is interesting.
out of phase?

for og poster, boxes are WAY to small....

I'm not quite sure where you guys are getting your ideas on the box sizes needed and how much power should be fed to them, not to mention your information on prefabricated boxes.

My setup: 2 of LAST year's Type-R (old version, non-accordion-like surround) 12" dvc 4-ohm in a sealed Prefabricated box (built by mtx, $75 at circuit city) with 1 cubic foot PER chamber, powered by a rockford fosgate 551s putting out 275 watts to EACH sub for a total of 550.. and..

I can feel my ears vibrate (not just hear bass, but feel my eardrums vibrating) and my nose itches. People have said their throats itch, too. I've also been told I can be heard from a block away.

Try seeing if you don't have the subs out of phase. Also try seeing if cutting a hole in your rear-speaker deck will help.

I have to say I am impressed with the low notes the Type R puts out for such a cheap sub. My friend blew his L7 because the woofer was hitting something in his trunk and threw the coils out of alignment. I wanted to see what all the hype was about so I talked him into getting a type R. I decided to use the old enclosure I built for his L7. Its 3.25 ft^3 ported to 34 hertz. The lows are tremendous and it sounds great. Now with that said it is no where near as loud as the L7 in the same box but it is still shocking how well the low notes sound. By the way its getting about 1000 watts rms.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

nose itch - lol... it depends on the person.

The old R's are definitely louder in a sealed box than the 05's... 100% not comparable.

The 05's sound ok in a big sealed box, but they really shine in a ported box.

try a smaller box tuned a little lower //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Compared to a smaller box... in 3+ cubes the R's sound ugh.

I've decided to scrap the sealed boxes. I checked and the R's are not out of phase. As for the power issue, they are getting about 500-600 Rms per sub, so that is not the problem. SPKRMAN, hook me up!

Man, I finally got everything in the car tonight, set my gains, took her out of the garage, and ultimate dissappointment.
I am running two Alpine Type R 12's (4ohm DVC wired to 2ohm) with 2 Alpine MRD-M605's (one each) in a sealed .995 cu ft box. I built the boxes and have 2 sheets of 3/4" MDF on the front to flushmount each sub (could this be he problem?) . I have the Amp rack (3/4" MDF as well) upright behind the back seats and the subs rear-firing. I don't seem to get the amount of bass inside the car I was expecting. I popped the trunk and the subs are moving pretty good, but nothing in the car. The amps are getting at least 13V ea when running, which should put out ~400-600rms @ 2 ohm. This is all in a 2002 Jetta. When the back seats are folded all the way down, the output is decent, but when up, it sounds very dissapointing. I was expecting much more out of this setup, and hopefully I have made a n00b mistake someone can help me out with.

Gains were set using DMM and headunit is Kenwood DDX7017 (I beleive it has 5V Preouts). Any help, advice, kick in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

***.995 cu ft per sub *** just to straighten it out.
do u have a bass knob on the amp, if so turn it up a little bit...i had the SAME problem with my type r's and i just turned it up a lil bit on my bx2005d and now they sound AWESOME. btw, mine are also sealed, 1.25cf per chamber.

Better save up for awhile. I heard good things about his boxes but I dont have 200-300 bucks to drop on a box.

I also dont know what to believe about spkerman anymore either. You said the 04's sound louder and better in a sealed application? Wow! I just dont know where you got that info from? I have a buddy that has well over 2000rms amp going to 3 of the 12" alpine type r's 04 model in a sealed box to where I have 2 05 12" type r's in a sealed box as well. He has a bigger amp and more subs in a Duarango to boot. My low end extension destroys his. His mid part sounds better but overall mine rapes his. He has even admitted to it hence why they are on ebay right now, lol! I would say you need to do some more testing on those 04's.

doesn't make sense to me that the seemingly redesigned and much better 05 Type-R would play less loudly in a sealed enclosure than the 04. I'm not sure Alpine would go through the trouble to make such improvements on a sub and end up with something with less output, regardless of what type of enclosure its in.

I'm glad you found my nose itch comment entertaining //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I have the amps set according to the gain tutorial on this forum, and I really don't want to risk them clipping by messing with "bass knob". I have double checked all connections and wiring, which only leaves the box. probably should have gone bigger for sealed, but I thought almost 1 cu ft each would be enough. Oh well, still am going to go ported now though. Just have to figure out how and when.

Yea, seems alittle high, but that is usually 200-300 shipped from what I understand. That's big *** freight, which usually comes with a big *** price tag to ship it. I tried the build-it-yourself method, and am not happy with the way it came out. I don't have the time to build a ported box myself, to have it sound bad. I would rather pay someone a little more to get me something I am going to like, rather than f**k with this all over again. So SPKRMAN . . . HIT ME UP (already requested quote on your site!)

what did u set your gain with? DMM and 50 hz test tone? if so, i would use -6db test tone. i use to use 0 db test tones bu when i used 6 -db test tones the output increase was night n day.
