Type R... in home?

I got a pair of Type Rs, but I'm almost thinking of putting one in my car and one inside. Assuming I get the proper plate amp, etc, how would this idea be? I know virtually nothing about home audio.. in fact my version of home audio is a 200watt max Aiwa radio from kmart. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I might just get a really nice 2.1 system for my computer as well...

Don't see why not.

Just use a lower Qtc enclosure than you might use in-cabin, or tune lower.

Wouldn't a sealed enclosure work? I figured I could just make some fricken huge box and give it a pretty low amount of power from a plate amp and that could do the trick.

That sounds like it'll work.

Best to model up whatever size enclosure you use in BBP6 or WinISD to give you an idea of the frequency response...

Eh, might be a while. I don't even know where to start with home audio. I know NOTHING.

With car audio, you need stuff like, wiring kit, head unit, speakers, amp, etc... what about home audio? I mean, say I keep both (or even one) of these Type R's for this home audio setup, assuming all goes well... what else do I need? Just 2 speakers and a receiver? Would my speakers from this aiwa 200wmax walmart stereo work? lol. Just a thought.

You need a plate amp to run the sub. The amp connects either to the subwoofer output on your receiver, or the high-level speaker terminals.

As for the speakers, I would go DIY.

Would 170 RMS in a big sealed enclosure be able to move a Type R 12 in a home audio application? Being the Type R's love high amounts of power I wasn't sure if 170 watt would be practical...

Jack - what about using mobile audio subs in a home application on low power in their manufacturer's recommended enclosure?

When I bought the DAT M6 that is in my car now I retired my old eXcelon SVC 10s in a dual-sub sealed enclosure as I figured that (A) No one would wanna buy them and (B) I might have a use for a decent set of 10s one day (I think we all know about the 'Pack Rat' frame of mind when it comes to old audio gear, right?)

Then it occurred to me that I might could use them for HT duty 'cause my receiver has an amp channel for LFE as well as a preamp LFE output.

I wired 'em in series to make an 8 Ohm load and hooked 'em up. They sound pretty durned decent, IMO.

Is it likely, in your opinion, that in a much larger enclosure they would sound noticeably better?

Nothing wrong with it, as long as the enclosure models up well for home use.

Usually you want a slightly lower alignment in home, because you don't have that nice bottom end boost you get from the cabin.

What exactly is QTC?

Also, how different are home audio subs versus car audio subs? Is it "bad" to mix and match? Is it like putting Diesel in a Gasoline vehicle or something?

Qtc is the term for the enclosure "alignment"...play around with it on BB6P or WinISD with frequency response curves, you'll instantly see what I mean. Google might also help...
