Type R Hype...?

You drive a tahoe and you only want two 12's? Gmonk fit three 15" Type Rs in TCAB Boxes in the back of a expedition.. a tahoes even bigger
One of the selling points of a Tahoe is the cargo space - it was for me anyway. Not everyone wants to use all of their cargo space on a system. That's why I went with 2 12's in a sealed box. I have decent bass and didn't lose much cargo room at all.

I must admit though that I'm considering going with 2 12" L7s in a ported box.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

Those ratings aren't a very good indicator of efficiency. I meant efficiency as in it doesn't take thousands of watts to get Rs loud.
i dont care what anyone says.... type Rs are NOT a very efficient sub.... i put my 2 new rlps on the same power and they are MUCH louder on the same power... type Rs have such stiff motors that it takes quite a bit of wattage to get one movin... (one of the many reasons that they like big boxes.... assuming that u have the power to throw at them) u want an efficient sub grab a pair of adire shivas. my buddies setup was considerably louder then my type R setup and he was runnin his subs on not even half the wattage... i was doin 1000 to my 2 12 type Rs and he was runnin 400 watts to his 2 12 shivas and they would own my type Rs any day....

and they actually arent very efficient at all, 85 bd 1w/1m, thats nothing to write home about.
What does 85 db @ 1w/1m have anything to do with efficiency? You're saying a sub with 92 db @ 1w/1m is more efficient than a sub with 85db @ 1w/1m? Why?

EDIT - Well I thought 1w/1m was measure of sensitivity but I was wrong. It does actually measure efficiency like you say. But afaik 1w/1m doesn't state which sub will be loudest in the end, correct?

Correct. There are many different things that determine how loud a sub will be. But as far as sensitivity a sub that rates at 87db @ 1w/1m is not better than a sub thats rated 85db's if the 85db sub can handle more power. Does that make sense? And of course there are other factors that will add up to total output of a sub.

Thats more along the lines of what I was thinking.

Perhaps what springy101 was alluding to is that a Type R sub requires more power to drive than other subs of equal output potential?

You guys have had some good info for me. The RF subs are 200w RMS 8 ohm SVC. Diddnt think that was a very efficent subwoofer. But with the plan i had, i figured it might have worked out. But the Rs are really starting to sound good. What size box would i need to make them puppys shine? Like LinvilleGeorge said.... i love the room my Tahoe has. Prolly the reason i went with that instead of a Expidition. I would like to keep as much as possible, but i am definitley flexible.

depends on the box you stick them in

If I recall correctly Type R 12" requires 1.3 cubic feet (volume after port displacement) for a ported enclosure. You could refer to the pdf document on alpine's website to get more info.

That's very conservative. Nobody builds a 1.3 cube box for their R (well most people don't). The boxes usually are 2 cubes or larger.

It's all install dependent. If you got beat by 2 shivas and 400 watts. . . I'm sorry your install sucked. Either that or you both were shooting for different things, there are many variables. Also, I don't trust anyone's judgement on "what's louder" because the ear is so shitty at measuring volume + there's the placebo effect. Put them on a mic with real results and I will believe you.

Ooooh, 2-2.5 per sub tuned in the low 30's seems to be the consensus.

Yeah well it may end up being 2 cubes net volume disregarding vent displacement. Or are you talking about 2 cubes gross volume? If so, why make it so much larger than what is recommended by the manufacturer?

LOL you will notice the hype R died out when the crew that paised them got a kicker sponsership. its an ok sub, Ive seen better for the same price. I had one for about 2 weeks then sold it off. Rather have alot of other subs.
Ummm, what are you talking about?

I still definitely recommend the type-r if the circumstances/installation calls for it.

You act as though that we just stopped running the type-r after we got sponsored by Kicker, which is not the case at all.

for the price type R's cant be beat.

and for that guy that made this post. i would run one 15'' type R. because it takes less power and has the potential to be just as loud as two 12's.

thats great.

the sub doesnt pound without 3 cubes net.
