Type R...disappointed?

Hey guys. I got my new car and threw in my new system.

15" Type R, Dual 2

Custom box. 2.9 cu. ft. @ 36hz

Directed 2400 amp

Alpine 9881 Deck

4guage wiring

I got this professionally installed at a place that does do some great work.

I got my car and...I'm just not all that impressed with it. It does not seem like that big of a step up from 2 10" type e's, in a ported prefab box.

I am not sure why this is. I have a good amount of power running to it, in a pretty nice box. The only thing I can think of is the port length is pretty...sad. Port diameter is about 1-2 wide. Could this be the problem?

PICS AND VIDS NOW UP---PAGE 2

Thanks

I put my 15" type R's in a bigger box tuned lower and they are insane. One of my 15's would crush anyone around here with two 10's. Maybe your new vehicle is not so good of an spl car though and its harder to get loud than your old one. Try a bigger box tuned lower and it should perform better, I like sending my around 1100-1200 watts. I think mine are tuned to 29hz and about 3.5-4 cubic feet.

What car are you using by the way?

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that.

Your new 15" Type-R woofers should absolutely slaughter the old 10" Type-E woofers in terms of sheer output and SPL efficiency.

Something is seriously wrong somewhere along the line. The problem is, there are so many possibilities as to what that problem may be.

It could be something as simple as incorrectly configured HU settings.

The amplifier gain, xover, EQ settings could be misconfigured.

The subwoofers could be wired incorrectly or out of phase.

You could be experiencing significant cancellation.

I am hesitant to say it may be a incorrectly designed ported enclosure, because even a poorly designed ported box can still be loud as hell as far as sheer output goes. Even if it were too small, tuned too high, or not using nearly enough cross-sectional port area.

If it is indeed due to poor vehicle transfer function (cabin gain), perhaps the shop could modify the trunk or rear deck somehow to allow more sound into the cabin.

You need to take the vehicle back to an authorized professional and have them troubleshoot this issue.

Since they installed it and if you don't really know what your doing bring it back and tell them whats up. Seriously a 15" type R is really ****ing loud. They sound OK but **** the low end is crazy.

Don't stress over it too much tonight. Drive up there tomorrow and talk to them about the problem. If they listen to it and recognize that there is indeed a problem, they will most likely be able to locate and fix it.

I think the wrong thing to do at this point (so early in the troubleshooting process) is to start plans on a new enclosure.

I had a grand am and it wasn't too hard to get loud in. I also took out the back seat and it got alot louder. Is your sub set to 15 on the deck? and most likely you need a bigger box or the sub is wired wrong.

are you getting much excursion cuz maybe they hoooked it up wrong with the jumper cable things. i am honestly not all that impressed with the 15's either. i have only built 4 boxes for them but L7's crush them. 2 12'' R's beat an L7. from what i have done, 3.75@34 hz is the best. port area somewhere around 60-70

is the box sealed or is there air leaking?

you could also give us some specs of the port and we could check so whether its tuned properly.

im assuming the installers wired it at 4 ohm. they cannot wire it any higher because that amp is not 1 ohm stable. but then again, that amp is rated 1400 @ 4 ohms.

it could be the way you box is positioned or how they built it. they probably didnt even build it to specs. two inches wide on the port is pretty small.

any pics?
