type r 12 distortion.............????????

did u read my question? how did i answer my own question.? i know the amp isnt at full tilt and still i get distortion at a certain limit. but the distortion starts to happen when it gets down to 11.5 ...so what is causing the distortion?. maxing out the sub( which i doubt ) or i need more electrical. will having weak electrical cause clipping in the amp sooner in the power. so more power to the amp results in cleaner and more power from the amp

Just your system voltage dropping to 11.5 will not create any added distortion. The most that would happen, would be when using amps with unregulated power supplies, the output would scale down with the voltage drop. Regulated ampls will just go into protection mode once the bottom threshhold of their useable voltage window is reached. Lowering system voltage will not cause an amplifer to clip its output, there would have to be another reason for extra distortion being added to the signal.

that explains alot. so what causes an amp to clip. is it the relation between the amp and the HU? how would i get more clean power out of the amp. or am i getting the rated 2400 already? how do i measure rms from the amp myself without getting it benched

clipping is when you are trying to drive the amp to produce more power than it can actually reproduce. either by sending the amp a dirty signal or setting the gain to hihgh. go get yourself a good dmm( digital multi meter). alot of people say to use test tones but test tones are not what you listen to everyday. but any way download and really hard hitting song that is the loudest song you know of, take a dmm set it to ac volts and measure the highest output voltage you see from the amp. the equation you need is sqrt(power*resistance) so for example you have 2 subs rated at 1000 rms and you have an amp capable of sending 2000 unclipped watts then the formula works out to. 2000 watts times say both subs are gonna be hooked to the amp at 1 ohm. so 2000x1=2000. then punch in 2000 and hit the sqrt button and you get 44.7 vAC. so at 1 ohm to get 2000 watts out the amp the you need to be sending 44.7 ac volts out the amp. what ohm load are you running? trying to push 2400? and just like audioholic stated low voltage wont cause clipping. you are probably like me though, you get real used to the bass you have really fast and want more but cant get more cuz you end up maxing everything out and it dont work! lol

hey lifted on 44's,,lol thanks i never used a meter to check voltage out the amp. i am running at 2ohm load. this amp runs at 2 ohms 2400 rms rated. im parallel on each sub and each sub to a channel. not bridged. so it 2000x2= 4000 so what voltage do i need then? if its not putting out that exact number, if its higher or lower what does that mean..? i have never tested the amp this way

ok so if the amp is rated at 2400rms@ 2ohm then you would see 69.28 volts out of the amp. if you want to do the 2000@2 ohm then you need to see 63.24 volts out the amp. but you have to be careful and you need to know what clipping sounds like. leave the sub hooked up. set your H/U vol to the max vol. you listen too daily. with the gain on the amp set to its lowest setting, set your LPF and if you have a subsonic filer set them to where you want them. with a dmm on the amp slowly start raising the gain til you reach your target voltage. so raise the gain til you either get 63.24vAC(2000rms) or 69.28vAC(2400rms). The reason i say to leave the subs hooked up is so you can hear any distortion on your way up to your target voltage. Now if you cant reach your target voltage(say you can only get to like 50 volts before you hear audible distortion) then either the subs cant handle the power or your amp wont do the rated power or you cant supply the amp enough power. what voltage rating is the amp rated at for 2400 watts? if its 14.4 then the amps not gonna do the full 2400 watts.. if you need me to explain anymore then just shoot me a PM. i am only online at night though so it may take me some time to answer back. also make sure you get a good DMM, dont geta el chepo because itwill be wrong most likely. i bought a elcheapo and it didnt read right so my readings were off alot. If it were me with your electrical dropping as low as it is your probably never going to get up to 69 volts. dont be surprised to find out that you get maybe at best 1500 watts out the amp before distortion.
