HDF will be okay, It will have a little more tendnacy to split when you install the screws, so be sure to use a countersunk bit and drill into the wood slowly... It will be fine.

 
If that were true, wouldn't everyone recommend HDF over MDF? Sounds fishy, inhumanacura. I think the higher amount of air in MDF makes a better sound dampener, while it's still strong enough to hold a sub..

I'm not 100% but I think people just recommend mdf cause it's just simply easier to get.
