Time for some deadening

Sound deadening isn't supposed to cover every inch of a panel. From Sounddeadenershowdown: "To control panel resonance you should use the best vibration damper you can find and only treat the 25% at the center of the panel."

True but it doesn't exactly hurt to overdo it a bit. The benefit is not haveing to tear off panelling and have to redo damping, a big plus for most people, who only wanna rip their vehicle apart down to the bare metal once if they can help it.

Is your trunk a Scion tC? For all we know you have an old 80's Cadillac.

It's a 2008 Pontiac G6. There are several trunks that are bigger than mine.

Except it does. This is one of those cases where to much can be a bad thing. Sure the benefit is you dont have to redo it, but the down side is it changes your resonant frequency, air space, etc.

thats why you should dampen 1st //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif and the airspace change is pretty minimul especially with 60mill..unless you go fking nuts and put like 200sq ft in your trunk alone.

Anything over 25% coverage is nuts. Its a waste of material and doesnt add anything extra. Thats the point.

yep. people use it for different reasons though, I coulda got some locktight or something but in order to stop my rattles I just layered the sh*t outa whatever rattled with dampner....worked out well for me. Noone here is claiming more is better. we're just saying it's not the worst thing in the world to overdo it. I just personally like to have full coverage when I apply it....partially just for looks that and I'm just one of those guys that doesn't see a good reason not to. I care that it helps out with bass and all but really I use it to be a soft barrier between the metal of my ride and anything else that could potentially bump into the metal and rattle like crazy. To each his own and we have proven that only 25% of coverage is needed for sound dampening. If you wanna use more for other reasons oh well.

If you want more effective sound deadening, use some kind of wood and loctite and stick it to the panels. This worked well for me on the roof of my truck. I mean, boxes are made out of wood, they hold together pretty well.

I guess I shouldn't say deadening, but rather bracing, less panel flex, etc...

Thats what CCF is for. Youre using the wrong product for the wrong purpose.

Its used between panels to keep them from vibrating against each other. Deadener is used to stop the panel from resonating, and MLV (Mass loaded vinyl) is used as a noise barrier to prevent road noise.

Good stuff! The other reason for not using more vibration damper than you need to control resonance is the problem it will create for future body work - it's way easier to get back to sheet metal with 25% coverage than it is with anything more. I learned this the hard way. Same reason you shouldn't glue anything to the sheet metal you don't absolutely have to.

If you're serious about SPL, you have to give up on the idea of ever getting the vehicle back to stock. Do what Buck said. More energy is lost to panel distortion and air leaks than anything else. Vibration damper works against you if you're trying to maximize SPL.

Vibration damper can help indirectly with rattles by controlling vibration in the sheet metal. That will educe the energy available to the rattles. It's seldom a complete solution and is always the indirect approach. Rattles are always one or more hard objects, one or more of which is vibrating, making intermittent contact with another hard object. The 100% effective solution is to put something soft and resilient, like the CCF whitedragon551 suggested, between the objects to keep them apart.

A rattling license plate is the perfect example. You could apply multiple layers of vibration damper on the back wall of the trunk to try and stop the vibration or you could put 25 cents worth of CCF on the back of the tag and stop it completely.

Interesting note - I'm in Maryland and we just had an earthquake while I was typing this. I share a building with a body shop. As soon as the building started to shake I headed over to their side to tell them to stop doing whatever they were doing that was bringing the building down.
